Yesterday I started the engine, after 5 seconds of running it shut off, I went to restart and all it did was crank but not start. Any ideas.

Thanks

Could be a lot of things, but the first thing I would check is the filter head. Prime it very well and see if you get any air, prime it again. Then try. Have you changed the filter recently or done any other work to the fuel system? The only time mine didn't start it was air in the fuel system.

I'm having the same problem. I tried priming the pump, but nothing is happening- no fuel or air is coming out of the bleeder valve. this also would happen intermittently last spring, too. I'm puzzled. Last spring, a squirt of diesel starting fluid would get it going, but I'm out of it, presently. any suggestions? bad fuel pump? it's been running well, I've got less than 10k on a fuel filter, just cleaned the MAP sensor a few days ago; 92k miles overall.

redcrd,

It sounds like it could be the SKIM inside your key. If it goes bad, then your jeep will start and run for a few seconds, then stop. Try a different key.

MaverikMoto,

It sounds like you have a restriction in your fuel system. Is the temp really cold outside? You could be experiencing gelling of your fuel. Are you running any biodiesel?

no biodiesel. I pulled the heater plug on the fuel head and I think I found the issue: singed plug that was wet with diesel. Putting my thumb over the socket allowed me to partially prime the filter. I'm picking up a new filter head assembly in about 40 minutes; I hope this takes care of the problem. The diesel tech at my local dealer is backed up through tuesday; the service manager was less than useless, although the parts manager was helpful, if not knowledgeable. I got waaaay more information from the local diesel injector service shop, who helped me pinpoint the likely causes, as well as this BBS.

I'm very grateful for this resource- while the parts manager was on the phone tryoing to figure out how to order the fuel head (fiche shows it as not available- just pn's for all of the other ancilary parts) I was able to get the proper pn's here, from my droid. Thnks LostJeeps!

I'm keeping my fingers x-ed that this does the trick.

Burned and leaky heater plug on fuel head will do it every time. I assume you also got the new heater plug wiring? FYI the new wiring colors don''t match the existing harness colors so join by matching wire size as close as possible. The wiring pks I've seen (3) have all come with an extra set of wires for reason and you do have to insert the new wires into the new plug and lock them in place with the blue retainer; no instructions on the latter but it's not too hard to figure out.

The new head comes with a new fuel fllter and WIF sensor installed. Keep your old WIF sensor just in case as it is about a $20 part which rarely fails but...

i've noticed that the colors don't match, but the stock wires appear to be both the same size. I'm guessing green= red & black = purple?

Turned out air was in the fuel system, Now my question is, is there something going wrong that allowed the air to get in? or can this happen from time to time.

MaverickMoto - I've done 3 and that's how I've hooked them up with no problems

redcrd - endless discussion on this on the forum best start with Sam's NOOB guide. Most common source is burned fuel heater plug in 1st gen fuel head-solution 2n gen fuel head with new fuel heater plug wiring, see above and the NOOB guide. If the 2n gen fuel head doesn't solve the problem other source is quick disconnect fittings in our fuel lines which are the same as on the gasser-fittings do ok on gasser which uses an intank fuel pump hence the line is under pressure but not so ok on CRD that has pump in engine bay hence fuel is being sucked thru the fuel line-solutions replace quick disconnects with fuel hose and clamps; in line fuel lift pump; in tank fuel pump the latter 2 low pressure. In theory it's also possible to run the tank so low that fuel slosh is enough to induce air into the lines so many of us tend to fill up at 1/8-1/4 of a tank before the warning light comes on.
