I just passed 30K miles on my '08 KK, and I noticed that the coolant level in the reservoir is about 3/4 inch (or 2 cm) below the min line when cold, and right at min or a little above when warmed up. I'm thinking I should top off the coolant. I have two questions:

1) The owner's manual specifies Mopar HOAT coolant, which is not available at AutoZone or Advanced Auto. I have a bottle of PEAK Long Life 50/50 left over from my old XJ, which says it is compatible with any color antifreeze and all makes and models. Is this ok to use, or should I go visit a dealer for the Mopar antifreeze?

2) Is it normal for the coolant level to be down below min at this point in a KK's life? I don't know that it's ever been changed before. I am the second owner, and the first owner put on 23K of city miles in 3 years.

Thanks in advance for that KK wisdom.

I went ahead and got the Mopar coolant, because I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry. The coolant reservoir took about 1/3 of the gallon to bring it up to max. I'm still curious what the answers to my questions are, in case anyone would like to weigh in. Thanks, --LFH

You did the right thing, run a search on the subject to get all the specifics. I do know that until you do a complete and thorough flush of the cooling system, you don't want to mix it with anything else,i.e. green coolant, or any other kind except Mopar. :JEEPIN:

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I searched on the general discussions board and found what you were referring to: that mixing coolant types really gunks up the system. I hadn't realized that '02-'07 Liberties also needed this special Mopar coolant, because I went straight from owning an old school 2000 XJ to an '08 KK. It makes sense, though, because they've had the 3.7L engine since 2002.

You can also get your HOAT coolant and any Ford dealer or Zerex GO5 is also HOAT coolant(mostly found at Napa).

called my local supplier (and client of mine)... they have zerex G-05 gallons, unmixed, for $13.50. that seems pretty reasonable compared to what I've been seeing otherwise. also have gallon jugs of distilled water, so I'll probably be getting a couple pairs soon.

Are you guys changing on mileage or time?

That does sound more reasonable than the $24 per gallon of coolant that I paid at the Jeep dealer. I'm not changing my coolant now, just topping off. The manual says to flush the coolant at 102,000 miles, so I just thought I'd wait. The color of my coolant is still ok. I topped it off with straight coolant yesterday (before I realized the jug wasn't a 50/50 mix), so next time I will top off with distilled water to bring it back to about 50/50.

How many miles are you at, sota?

just rolled over 34k on a 2007.
I'm still stuck in the Old School of coolant every 3-5 years or about 60k miles. Hell I don't even trust these extended oil change intervals and still do it every 3k miles religiously along with the filter! I even changed the trans/t-case/diffs at 30k. when it hits 60k I'll probably dip the trans and diffs and send them off for analysis before I change them again... especially the diffs since I filled them with expensive synthetics. but then another 30k for me and the jeep could easily be 5-6 years. :SOMBRERO:
