See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25852&start=20 online tstat and gasket run about $115 give or take.

Install not too difficult - keep track of hoses for reinstall; use HOAT coolant only; there are 4 bolts (one on top to an obvious bracket and 3 horizontal thru the body of the tstat into the block of which 2 are in front and fairly easy to get to and one in lower back that's invisible; on that back one it has the same head size but clearance is a problem so use a 1/4" extension to reach in there not 3/8").

EDIT - I goofed on the bolt pattern, it's 1 top/1 horizontal front/2 horizontal rear and the bottom rear is the hard one to reach.

I believe the t-stat is built into a housing and cannot be changed without some creative machining.

Best option is to go with a new inline thermostat if your current stat failed open (the truck will not come up to operating temp)

How come everyone is going aftermarket for themostat. Maybe stock unit sucks but I would like to try stick with it. Worse than timing belt job?

More because they would rather replace a $15 part every few years than a $100 part every few years. The stock thermostat was disected by another member on here and found to have some less than satisfactory engineering which means they are destined to fail eventually in the open position because of the weakening of a spring.

Plus the $15 parts aren't an over-engineered piece of junk and being much simpler don't tend to fail as often. In 30 years of repairing my own vehicles this is the first thermostat I've ever had to change due to failure.

That's it. 20 min of work and some HOAT anti-freeze replacement, and you'll be running at just a tick off the 1200 line on the gauge

Use the spring hose clamp or a worm drive hose clamp as a straight edge and cut with new skil knife blade which I find cuts hose material better if you first push the tip all the way thru the hose first and then make the cut. Precisely straight is nice but not critical.

Counter guy Napa asked if I need orings? I went ahead and ordered new Crown thermostat with housing $62bucks(will show some pictures of unit)will see it when it gets here. Also ordered all inline so I will have some options. My thinking about the stock design is to allow better water flow to cool turbo. But right now it's cold and getting good heat is my main concern. Will new housing unit have gaskets or can I reuse old ones

As far as I know there are only 3 options for 2.8L CRD tstats: 1) OEM; 2) kap's reman of the OEM that opens it up to use a regular drop in tstat but maintains all the ports on the OEM tstat body (once he gets up and running again down under); and 3) inline in the OEM tstat to radiator hose in which case you must retain the OEM housing to keep the proper ports and coolant circulation pattern (this includes a recent post about just sort of free handing a tstat in the hose with no housing apparently up against the plastic radiator hose fitting - IMHO I'm not fond of this idea but maybe I'm just a nervous nellie - and someone who cut the OEM housing open, removed the tstat, welded the housing back together gutted, and welded an inline to the outlet to the radiator).

That ca $62 Crown tstat that's supposed to be for the 2.8L CRD won't work if you mean SKU 5072705AB

I will be very curious what you get with that Crown #. On line pictures show 1) http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/detai ... 705AB.html a rather expensive regular drop in tstat which won't work or 2) http://www.fourwheelerhb.com/showitem.a ... 20HOUSING& something that looks very much like the 2.8L 05/06 tstat but without one of the 3 ports and a different bolt pattern (1 in front/2 in back vs. 2 in front/1 in back). I still don't think it will work but maybe we will be pleasantly surprised.

EDIT - I was wrong on the 05-06 tstat bolt pattern, it's 1 top/1 horizontal front/2 horizontal rear, sorry about that. Apparently missing port is an issue though.

The bolt pattern looks correct from what we can see. It should be one in front. That missing port is a concern, however. Isn't it an air bleed going back to the reservoir?

Dang it I stand corrected on the bolt pattern, 1 top/1 horizontal front/2 horizontal rear. Will correct other posts on this. So much for doing something by memory and not looking.

Ok here is part I received car-parts with discount code 10 percent off from retailmenot.com $62 total with shipping

Not sure if it will work maybe missing one port? At least it gives me an idea of mopar unit. Going to work ya no na. Have the inline coming as well and chev thermo. If it will not work I can even order factory part $109 plus ship. I figure when I work on this jeep I want everything needed not waiting weeks for it to show up. Also if other port is just to res tank could I not splice in connection somewhere.

That appears to be the equivalent of a Jeep tstat part #05072705AB per the 2003 model year parts fiche on Sams NOOB guide link. If one assumes, I'd do not know if that's a good assumption, the guts of this tstat are similar to those on the 2005/06 tstat then this is missing the right angle de-gas fitting. I doubt you can tap anything in but then I don't have a clue how the 2004 and earlier coolant circulation pattern compares to the 2005 and later pattern.

Going out on a speculation limb based on the 2003 parts fiche I suspect the plastic tank on the firewall, which serves both as the top of the radiator and as an overflow bottle, has at least 1 less port than the later model tank and the overflow/de-gas connection on that earlier tank is direct to the radiator. If that's the case I suppose it might be possible to make this tstat work if one also obtained an early model firewall tank and maybe an early model radiator. But if so why bother.
