New battery 1 day old, jeep just quit on freeway all light on dash and bells ringing. Battery was at 9 percent so what should be my next step. Is there a fuse or relay that could be bad maybe ground. Or is regulator shot in alternator and I am guessing regulator is built inside alt non replace. I am going to price shop new Alternator stop me before I purchase if there is something else I overlooked. Is replacing ALT as simple as it looks.

Replacing the alternator is as simple as it looks, pull the belt, 2 bolts on the front, one behind and 2 on the intake bracket.

There is no regulator as such, the ECU "pulses" the alternator field to create the 12v signal, so it is all one unit.. Just remove / replace. AutoZone or Advance Auto can source the correct replacement alternator with a lifetime warranty for $150 or so, the dealer will sell you the SAME UNIT for $300 with a warranty that expires when you leave their counter.

I got my replacement at Advance, it comes with the correct clutched pulley installed. Haven't had an issue since.

Replacing the alt really is as easy at it looks, sourcing one can be a bit harder, autozone has a reasonably priced one with a lifetime warranty, just check into their availability first.

A little off topic but kinda related.

I was checking out rock auto for these and they have a couple of different amperage ratings listed.

Anyone know what the amperage is on the stock alternator?

Ok for anyone trying to remove there serp belt Orielys has serp belt tool $30 put 15mm on end put on center adjustment pully (read belt route diagram on front grill), go clockwise and mine loosened up. Clearance was close to fan be cautious. Good info for anyone replacing there's as breaker bar and 15mm would not fit unless you remove air box and for $30 bucks saves alot of time effort. Wish me luck tomorrow when ALT comes 1 day shipping. I did have chance to test with full charged bat, with volt meter my readings stayed same or dropped with motor running. If it is like my truck I get 14plus volts running fyi

My circuit diagram for the 2002 KJs shows that the thick cable going from the alternator to the battery is actualy a "fusable link". I dont believe my Export 2002 CRD has such a feature but if you do have such a fusable link and it is blown then putting in a new alternator will not change anything.

My 06 HAS a fusable link but I'm not sure just where it is in the circuit
It's phycially located between the battery and alternator and is marked "fusable link"

Well circuit-wise it is the thick wire that carries the charge from the alternator to the battery!
This is obviously a fire-hazard reduction feature....if the battery or anything else has a drastic short then the alternator will stop supplying current to feed the fire by fusing out the fusable link. I have also heard, on another vehicle, someone charged his battery with the leads the wrong way around and only damage was the fusable link blown!
A simple continuity test will say if the link has blown.
