Have not wanted to bother Mark, but I am tingling with anticipation and understanding.
The guy must be going crazy trying to get everything ready to go.
On the other hand I have to leave for the west this fall and have decided to hold off until the last moment before buying a third new thermostat.
Ha! Isn't life full of unknowns.
Still really like the CRD Liberty and this has been part of the fun, trying to make it better. You the Man Mark!!!

**Another Update**

Unfortunately tstat work will be suspended until I get to Australia.

We accepted an offer on our house on the 1st and and just closed on it on the 23rd. We've been so busy I haven't had time to machine or anything. Everything has been flying by extremely fast and unfortunately we didn't get to the tstat units in time to get them done. I am shipping my metal lathe/mill to Australia. I bought the largest transformer I could find so I can continue work in Australia. I will ship all the tstats and parts with my personal goods to Australia and start on them when they arrive there. The offer on our house and closing happened so fast that we don't even have everything out of the garage yet. I should be getting orders on Monday hopefully (lots of delays). Until I actually get the orders I cant schedule my goods getting picked up and so until then i will have access to my lathe, but it will be in someone elses garage and I still need to get the rest of our stuff out of their garage. Currently all of our stuff except the lathe and a few tools, etc is in the storage unit.

I will keep you all posted and if by some miracle I can get some done before I go I will let you guys know. There is only a very small chance I get things packed up and have time in the garage to work on these (if the new owner lets me) so don't get your hopes up.

Sorry to not make the deadline. I know I let you guys down, but I will do my utmost to get you all taken care of as soon as possible.

- Mark

No worries man. Glad the house sold - was getting nervous for you there. Take care of your family and get them done when you can.

Another Update:

I can't remember if i had mentioned this, but the person that was going to take over the project wasnt able to.

I am currently awaiting my household goods shipment which is in customs in Adelaide, AU (FINALLY  ) to get through and shipped to us here in Alice Springs, AU. Once I get things moved in and my lathe and mill set up I will give it a try with the transformers and see how the motors do with the 50hz electricity out here. If it all works I can start it all up again in my free time.

So far we've got a house with a single car garage that should have room for my lathe/mill and a small vehicle. We are using bikes loaned by my work to get around untill we get a car and they also let us use a tv, fridge, microwave, washer/dryer so we are pretty setup until our personal goods get here. We had 7000lbs of house hold goods which includes my lathe/mill and garage tools so hopefully it will all fit in our house :juggle: .

I'll shoot out another update when we get our stuff and get it moved in/setup.

God bless you all and if theres anyone in Alice Springs on the forum you better shoot me a message so we can say hi in person. :)

- Mark

Update...

Well, Christmas has come and gone and only one crate arrived of the 8 crates we had Shipped to Alice Springs, Australia. We are waiting on the rest of them to arrive (hopefully in January 2012) to get it all delivered to the house.

God bless and Merry Christmas!

This is a very interesting subject for me as I have in the past created "Hybrid" Thermostats for VW TDI engines(ALH in particular) that bumped their operating temp to 205 instead of the stock 195 with a 3-4 MPG difference. If I end up getting a Liberty CRD soon I will be looking into this type of modification. Here is what I did with the TDI:

Hey! Small world... I just read all 43+ pages of your thread on Tdi club! Did my Jetta last week.

I'm running an inline stat until I get to the 100K mark; then I will convert back to a factory style stat.

Did you ever find any long term issues with your higher temps? I know some predicted that the head would move around more from increased expansion/contractions...

No long term issues that I have had so far. Its been itstalled and running in the ALH at around 207 Deg F for 15K plus miles, and no problems. I've recently inspected the lower and top end, and no excess wear was detected. I did notice a 3-4 MPG increase running at 205 Deg F now VS the 186 Deg F I used to run at. Wonder how hot the CRD can be safely run at? I know turbo issues have been problematic on these types of engines.

Hi kapalczynski.

I am in Australia and am in need of a new Thermostat, so would like to look at one of your retrofitted models.

Are you up and running yet in Alice Springs?

Hi Mark,
Hopefully you have gotten your household goods by now.

When you get set back up I would like to get one of your resigned thermostat housings and new thermostat as I suspect I may be needing one in the near future as I currently have 91K miles on my CRD.

I sent you a pm to get on the waiting list if it is still possible to get on the list.

Thanks,
Chris

Hope you have got all your crates by now! If your still working this t-stat mod please include me on the list....also, is the new Grand Cherokee available in AU with the diesel? Maybe you could slide one in your empty crates and ship back to the states. :pepper:
