Hey all,

I want to get a supplemental block heating system for my CRD. Something that will do well at maybe -10* f. The built in heater does OK, but doesn't seem that efficient.

I've been looking at these two:

Do you guys have any input on these two. The proheat stuff looks cleaner to install and I'm leaning that way. But are there more benifits to the coolant pump?

I would go with the coolant because you will also get heat right away. Not wait for heat to defrost the windows.

I would go with the pad heater, easier to install and more efficient.

I think I'll get the pad. I'd rather not have to worry about moving parts or cutting into my coolant lines and worrying about leaks.

The 250W pad is kinda lame. I know - I have one. It gets the oil decently warm after a few hours, but you have absolutely no heat from the vents like you do with the stock block heater.

As for being more efficient, it's actually less efficient. Low power use does not equal more efficiency. After all half the pad is touching the oil pan, so the other half of the heat goes to the air. If you really want a good heater, go with the coolant circulating type.

Are you using this heater to augment the factory block heater, or as the only block heater? The pad heater is what I use as a secondary heater. Works excellent with block heater. Can't comment on it as the sole block heater.

Using it to augment, but was using it alone when my block heater cord broke up in the engine bay. As an oil heater it works fine. But that's about all it heats. Not as effective alone as the factory heater for getting heat in the cabin sooner. Bear in mind the factory heater is 400W and it's all going into the block.

A 400W in block heater is plenty. My old Perkins 354T that I traded in on my Liberty only had a 400W block heater and it would start like it was 60F at -20F as long as I remembered to plug it in.
One thing that will help starting is a good Battery.
Since I need to start at -15F when I park at the airport, I pulled my Optima Red Top (replaced under Warranty three years in a row) and put in a Sears Platinum with 880 CCA.

I know my block heater is working, the coolant temp gauge (24*f) was just moved a little but I didn't have any heat! It l definitely heats up faster and was plugged in all night. I wonder if added heater would help it heat up faster yet. Most likely not worth the extra energy it would use.
