Oil out the exhaust = Failing turbo? Right?

Hello my name is Al, this is my first post although I browse the website often. Im located in Houston,Texas.

The past few days it has got cold over here and my jeep has started smoking alot (kinda whitish smoke) during start up all the way up til the engine gets warm. Once it gets a tick past the 1/4 mark on temp guage the smoke goes away. My first thought was that it was bad glow plugs and that the smoke is unburnt fuel. Well this morning it was smoking again until it warms up, I got to work and clocked in, and for some reason I smelled a "oil burning" smell when I got a wiff of the exhaust, Well I looked at the ground and I found 2 drips of oil (about the size of a nickel) at that point my heart sunk because I automatically think bad turbo. After that I got back in the jeep, went to park it went to check the oil level and it is about a good 3/4 inch under the MIN level, and the oil on the stick was (bubbled).

Am I right to assume it is the turbo? Im not in a place to buy a brand new turbo but I do have a bonus at work(who knew a degree can benefit you so much) that I get tomorrow, that I know for sure is all going to the jeep.......

A quick background that can help: I got my jeep last december, ran very well, did the usual: oil changes, filters, etc. Around March or may I noticed that my jeep lost over half its oil due to a leak; (this leak I can't find but my starter, is covered in oil) and seems to lead somewhere under the intake where the hose meets up with intake.) Once I saw it, put oil immediatly. About a month or two ago, I started hearing a loud whining noise everytime I drove and only under acceleration; once I let go of the trottle, whine goes away. Checked oil level, topped it off and after a while, the whine went away. Today the loud whining noise is gone, but I got oil coming out the exhaust; not rapidly but still at a good rate. Last time I topped off oil was last November 18 so I lost about a Quart and a half total since then.

Howdy Al - Welcome to LOST

1) on the 3/4" low - how long after you turned the engine off? - it takes at least 30 minutes for the oil to drain down.
2) I don't think it's possible to get unburned oil - through the engine - I think if it goes into the intake - it becomes fuel. Now you can have condensation in the exhaust system and it could look black - but it should be mainly water (in a high humidity environment uuummmhh did you say Houston?)
3) The only time I had real smoke - it was the turbo hoses - they might be leaking - worth a check.
4) there have been a couple of valid turbo fails - but they're rare - hoses are common.

6) the leak bothers me - the couple of real fails - were the oil line coming from the Turbo - and it only takes about 30 seconds to pump all of the oil out of the engine when it goes.....that's when the rods open view ports in the bottom of the block...

It is possible to push oil past one of the oil seals in the turbo.

In your case it would be on the turbine side and is letting it come out of the exhaust.

I've never heard of it on a CRD but have seen it a few times on turbo gas Audi's when the PCV system was too restrictive.

They would smoke at idle similar to what you are saying. Not sure how this helps you though.

Check your intake hoses for leaks. I do not recall if one runs above the starter?? But if it does then I would suspect a leak in that area. That would also explain the hissing sound and the smell of burning oil and maybe the drops on the ground...

My mind is a little more at ease now; now it's on to work on the liberty...

I am going to top off the oil and give it a good drive tonight or tomorrow(Haven't drove it since I parked it at work) to see if it is just me or if I am really losing oil at a rapid pace(Thanks ATXKJ for pointing out the 30 min wait time) I was waiting about 5 min. Also since November 18, I have driven quite a bit; more than 1000 miles so that might explain some of the loss of oil(Highway miles)

Got a $1500 bonus at work for recieving a degree($1200 after taxes), but I am going to apply the majority of it to the jeep.

My passenger turbo hose is really oily and needs to be replaced; the driver side hose looks ok, but I'm still replacing both with new samco hoses. (ordered today)

Once I get the hoses and take the old ones apart; I will try to trace my original leak since I can't seem to point it out just by looking under. I am hoping that the hoses is causing all my smoking issues; but I am not betting on it just yet.

I am also thinking of changing the glow plugs; but I have been reading that the new metal ones require a reprogram of the ecu so I am still deciding(I know I have at least one bad glow plug because I do have a code thrown for that)

On top of that I do have a code for the egr being thrown(P0401) and I was considering buying a new egr since I am able to right now.

I have a provent filter at home that I have been wanting to put on, and it will go on for sure once I get the Samco hoses.

I will check turbo for endplay as well so I am looking forward to recieving the hoses; I won't use the jeep as my daily driver in the mean time; just to be safe....

i would put the egr money towards a green diesel tune it eliminates the egr and increase fuel economy.

GDE tune makes Libby turn a cold shoulder to the EGR: As long as it still seals and isn't flapping in the wind, you can wallpaper over that back door and forggeddaboudit.

As far as replacing the glow plugs....have a look through this forum and you will see that an Italian company is starting to distribute a new form of glow plugs that are still 7 volts and do not need re-programming.
