Phenomenal fuel economy...Is it about to blow?? :)

We took a little trip over the T-bird holiday. Left early in the morning, had very little traffic, used cruise control and did the speed limit (via GPS) the whole way.

I will preclude this by telling you that we normally only get about 23MPG in mixed driving. I have seen mid 30's in easy freeway trips before. This trip I was floored by the numbers. We fueled up at a Maverick in northern utah county (Stopping at the first click) and drove 209 miles to Moab, Ut. Much of this is up a long canyon, then back down the other side to Moab.

When we arrived we were too early to check in to our hotel, and the fuel guage was still over 3/4 of a tank so I ran to the far end of town and filled at the Maverick there. The odo read 209 and the jeep took 4.9 gallons only after I topped it 3 times after the click!! That 42.65 MPG!! :shock:

Couldn't possibly be right could it??

A day of trail riding brought an Ok 14 MPG or so. I guess all day in low range will do that. :dizzy:

The trip home was a less stellar, but still impressive 36.8 MPG. Tires were at 44psi both ways. GDE ECO tune and Trans Module. 3" Cat-Back with an Aero-turbine muff. This was the first longish trip I have taken without a trailer in tow...

Will need some exhaust repair after that one! It did put a nice dent in the muffler and scrape it up a bit.

Wow that's awesome. I wouldn't think its about ready to BLOW! You prolly got some really good fuel (high cetane) mixed with great driving conditions. I've had experiences like that before. Not with my Lib but with my 97 Ford. 26 mpg on one trip. Haven't seen it since.

What you did not invite me lol seriously I have owned 8 wranglers and lived in Utah my whole life but never been to Moab. 42 is crazy lol maybe motors just get broken in at 100k

Nice pics, I'm sad that I didn't do that stuff when I was out west in Vegas for a year. (Didn't own the CRD yet tho)

Next time I go out there, I'm getting some rocks under my tires for sure.

Wow! Now THAT is crazy!!

We usually tow my wife's Willys CJ-2A with the Liberty, but this was just a relaxing weekend getaway for our anniversary. I've been going since 1986 and this is the first time I've ever stayed in a hotel. Off-season rates are pretty good.

Given that the Libby has all the aerodynamic advantages of a brick, I can see getting something like that with a strong tailwind. Given the accounts lately of strong winds out west, it sounds like you were headed the right way at the right time. I ran into the reverse last september and spent a whole day pulling a full-size travel trailer into a 40-50 mph headwind coming across Oklahoma. Besides having a very hard time keeping any speed over 50, the mileage was really horrible, down in single digits.

Could be.. we fought a high headwind towing a trailer out of Moab earlier this year and only managed 11 MPG on that stretch. I was pushing it pretty hard just to see what it would do.

I have had higher fuel economy when exposed to RADAR.
If RADAR did anything to help the combustion process, CARB & the EPA would find something wrong with it. I suspect all RADAR does is lighten the right foot a little :ROTFL:

It has definitely lightened my wallet a few times!!

Really good fuel is all i can think i managed to pull 29 while towing a loaded trailer to flordia once. I got some home made bio from a friend before leaving and he called it his special mix. He is a chemical enginer so i trusted his judgement and filled up at 2.50 a gallon. I thought it was alot for homemade and wasn't expecting much but a clogged filter. It did clog my filter but only after giving me 290 miles on half a tank. :shock:

Well I wish he was but he sold his plant after some issues and now it is up forsale again. The guy is asking 4500 for it with 1200 gallons of collected oil. It is a 85 gallon batch plant and by my understanding extremely easy to operate and still complete.

Collecting the oil (and getting a steady supply) was always my hardest challenge too. I've made over 1k gallons of my own, and with the fuel prices lately I'm thinking about it again... But I don't have that kind of scratch sadly. Best of luck to him selling it.

I would be interested to know what "additive" he specifies that needs to be put into the oil to thin it out enough that the fuel pump would not be damaged.

What about engine results? Longevity? Performance or operational considerations? This is burning trash in the engine, these engines have already proven themselves to be very fragile.

My '86 Ford is an IDI. Burning Waste Motor Oil (WMO) is very common in those old motors because they will literally burn just about anything. One caveat to running WMO in an IDI is that you WILL need to change your injection pump every 50K-60K miles instead of at 100K-120K with diesel fuel. It works out for some guys, because an injection pump and injectors can be done on those old diesels for less than $500.

My guess is that if you factor in an Injection Pump and Injectors for the CRD it is cheaper just to buy diesel.

WVO is impossible to get around here as the local authorities have granted a monopoly to one politically savvy individual and he pulls no punches about having them prosecute and fine the heck out of anybody taking "his" WVO.

I took the CRD on my hunting trip which is mostly highway and I calculated with 38mpg. This is driving at between 66-75 and some hilly 55mph, so not really taking it easy. I had about 580 miles when the low fuel light came on and had 603 at the gas station. That was about my best tank so far, almost makes it worth all the CRD issues!
