Good idea i never thought of looking into fail safe option, it should work the same as all others, the members using the housing should also use a fail safe option. I noticed they also have the 180 degree option if we want it. Renault was not listed so i used Eagle Medallion 2.2 and there it was so if you want it ask for eagle medallion which was a renault medallion in 1988. I will change mine in a year or so with one of these.
this further improves this idea. thanks.

I just installed my Stant yesterday and it works like a charm. It was really cold (about 25F) so I started the engine and warmed it up for 5 minutes so I could actually pull the rad hose off the thermostat. Engine cold and hose cold, I yanked and yanked and couldn't pull it off. I drilled a 3/32" hole and my temp gauge sits just a tiny bit left of 12 o clock. I hope this helps with my mileage as I was previously a tick right of 1/4 on the temp gauge and couldn't get better than 21 mpg on long smooth highway trips.

I am also slightly uneasy about not having a "fail to open" thermostat and look forward to the report on the Renault installation. Thanks for all the help. I went from $250 for OEM Thermostat + 2 hours @ $80/h for OEM replacement to $15 part + 30 mins of my time. Neat!

I have been wondering about summer operation though. The opening through the Stant thermostat is quite small relative to the Interior Diameter of the 2" radiator hose. Do you guys think this will cause a severe enough restriction to reduce our flow to radiator and thus heat rejection capacity?

this should be no less a restriction as the members using the housing style, you could always get the 180 degree if necessary that is what i got just in case.

If you watch the video on Fail-safe - I'm not sure it's very helpful.

It protects from an overheat - i.e. the valve has to open too wide - and then it'll lock open
but the Thermostat fails I've seen - are the expansion/spring weakening over time and cycles and not opening enough, doesn't look like it would do anything for those.

Did you drill an extra hole in it? I got one for my wife's jeep and it already had a really small hole, so I didn't drill it out. Just dropped it in and ran it. No hot temp or mountain driving yet, but it stays 1/2 tick left of center, and no temp spikes.

This may be a dumb question. I just ordered the stant 195 degree option. Do u do anything to the stock tstat or just let it be. Currently my gauge is the common 1/4 location

Yes, 1/8th hole.

I tried to find a stant locally. One store crossed to a Federated (MotoRad) 237-192 and had it in stock. The thermostat and clamp were under 15$. This has a jiggler already installed so no drilling was needed! Our CRD has been running cool, around the quarter mark. Now on my test drive it goes to just left of center, and has a nice toasty heater. The mileage has been 21-22, it has a full tank and I will monitor to check for improvement. I think the fan is the next project as it seems to grumble and squeal a bit on startup. Here is the pic link: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/1013026.jpg/ [/IMG]

Update: Mileage has come up to solid 24mpg w in town driving

Just to give an update on mine. I drove down to the Florida Keys after Christmas and stayed a week there and a week in Sarasota (mom's house). Had absolutely no issues through 2500 miles of driving with a wide range of temperatures anywhere from just above freezing when I left to 88 degrees when I got there. It gets to the halfway mark, which is around 190 degrees on torque, and stays there. I left work the other day and it was 19 degrees out, heated up to 190ish about half mile from the plant despite the frigid temps.

$10.84/shipped from Rock Auto after a 5% discount... worth it to try for me. My wife's CRD has been running cool for a while, and with her driving 120 miles a day, I am sure the MPG has been affected. This will hold me until I can get the funds to replace the thermostat assy. Does anyone have pictures of the install or where they drilled the hole?

My thermostat arrived today from RA! It is an interesting looking thing that was made in France. I'll try to get it installed tonight when the wife gets home, if not, it'll be Saturday. I drilled a 1/16" hole in it as that was the best I had. Hopefully that'll be enough. I am thinking about changing the coolant as well since its never been done to my knowledge. Any suggestions or instructions on how to change it? Is there a petcock? I did a search, but did not find much info... perhaps I am missing it. Thanks!
