When this starts, does it generally occur ONLY at idle and goes away completely at any rpm higher than idle? We have recently developed a pretty loud rattle at idle that that seems to be coming from the general alternator area. It does not seem to be muffled enough to be rod rap inside the block. It's too sharply metallic (roughly 100K miles).

Thanks,

DOC

Don't know about only at idle but if the clutch is covered with red dust and at idle when you look at the serp belt and its tensioner and you see them jumping up and down it's almost certain the alternator clutch is shot. If so it needs attention ASAP to avoid damage to the serp belt and its $200 or so tensioner. Some folks have used http://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/ for rebuilds with decent luck and apparently a quick turn around.

At that mileage I hope you have a timing belt job set to be done in the very near future.
