What is the "FCA" valve? Could you be a little more specific please?

As per Wolverine's info link on first page, "FCA" or Fuel Control Actuator is the fuel pressure regulating valve on the back of the CP3 pump.
Also know by few other aliases such as, from the FSM; Fuel Quantity Solenoid or as seen here on Lost; MROP. :dizzy:
Considering the symptoms my jeep has, it is the most logical suspect part to suspect next to replace.
Thanks, 2mopar-diesels and others for the advice.

Unfortunately, replacing the MPROP did not solve my issue.
That and the fuel pressure solenoid were the first parts to be replaced.
The scan tool at the stealership doesn't indicate any irregularities either.

That's not good to hear. :?
Did the dealer check the injectors?

yes, the injectors have been checked and are not leaking down according to the tech at the dealership.
My local mechanic has also confirmed this.

Time for a CP3 then..........again, most Dodge trucks with the common rail Cummins from 2003-on have the same issues, and when they are not lucky to only need a valve or solenoid, it almost always winds up being the pump itself. There is a flow bench test that can determine what (if any) kind of pressure the pump is putting out. I've read countless threads about this issue over on TDR and DTR diesel forums due to the fact I own one, and keep a good eye on it's cp3 pump!!!

Might be, but why would the jeep once started, run strong with no problems?

That's been my question for the last couple of years.
Starts fine and runs great first thing in the morning. Just have to plan my drives so it cools down to start.

The CP3 is an electro-mechanical pump, and can easily have something with it's circuitry miss-firing inside the pump itself and would never throw a code and would explain the purely randomness to your guys' problems.

How difficult is the install of a new pump?

Aren't they on opposite sides of the engine?

Ok you might be experiencing something simpler like air in fuel? Those 1 gen fuel filter heads leak at fuel heater plug. You never mentioned anything about fuel pressure so sometimes it's the simple things. It's in NOOBs guide, if your experienced CRDer dis regard my post maybe it could help someone else.

Probably about an eight hour job and it requires some of the Miller special tools, such as the pulley spanner to loosen the pump pulley nut. And also, you either have to use the special tool to hold the pulley in position with the timing belt or go through the routine of holding the engine in time the the locking pins and removing the timing belt.
The FSM also says to evacuate the air conditioning and remove the compressor hoses, but I'm not sure if that is necessary as the compressor is located below the CP3. The FSM has been wrong many times before.
At this time I'm debating whether to spend $340 on a Fuel Quantity Solenoid or just going ahead with a pump rebuilt by Bosch for $800.00.

The fuel pressure remark is a good point and I'm working in the dark on that. My scanner doesn't read rail pressure.
I would like to know what brand of tool and how much it would cost for a diagnostic scanner tool that will read fuel rail pressure.

Ok wait just second you have 2 CRDs so after I posted was going to erase my first message but maybe a good thing I did not. Problem with 2 stroke outboards is many times fuel pressure related or at least all mine have been this way, and carbs. Any small leaks or ways to prevent good fuel system seal can be cause. Just replaced quick fitting on my Yamaha with a generic fater seal and fixed my outboard. Now previous owner had real marine mechanics that could not get it running new, I figured it out quick. I am relating our diesel fuel system to 2stroke outboard. Like I mentioned hot no start sounds like what my CRD did and found the answers right here Lostkjs without there advice I would have been screwed. At least check heater plug, maybe toss on new fuel filter as per directions in Noobs guide then you can say that is not problem. What happens when you push fuel primer 7 times? Also forget the fuel pressure reader for now look for simple things. Once this is done and you are confident then I can bounce ideas. There are much better mechanics here than me but sometimes little help never hurts. Get a picture of fuel head and post that sucker, remove fuel heater plug if installed better pics. Edit my Fuel heater is unplugged after dealer installed new unit under warranty I quickly yanked it out or better yet pull the figgen relay for fuel heater after work is completed, that sucker was abnormal hot! You can install new head pretty easy if no warranty is available.

JeepDan, have you tried new crank or cam position sensors? I am having similar issues. I also have replaced the fuel pressure control valve with no luck. Mine runs fine until warmed up then shuts down and won't start until cooled down for 10-15 mins.

I did swap cam shaft position sensors with my other CRD, it did not help. As for the crank position sensor, my engine hasn't shut off on it's own while running, only a starting problem, so I didn't consider that the crank position sensor might be failing.
Not having any trouble codes makes me think that it is not electrical in nature. :?:
I have had a pulsating chirp under the hood for a while that I cannot locate. I originally thought it was the old serpentine belt or the alternator pulley but it wasn't. I happens at maybe 1/3 to 1/2 throttle under load.

Having no way of testing the MROP valve or do I know of anyone who can bench test the CP3, I decided to order a Bosch rebuilt CP3 pump tonight.
