Hey Guys,

How can I activate the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) on my EVIC? I have seen pictures of the TPMS screen in ads for other CRDs, but mine is blank when scrolled through to that point in the menu.

there is nothing in mine either, no options it only indicates when there is a tire low. mine will not always say which tire is low. i had a low spare the other week then another tire picked up a screw. it went from "low spare" to "low tire pressure" not telling me which one. now that they are both fixed nothing about tires is on any screen.

UPDATE:
I did a search here and found there are two different TPMS systems but both use the same wheel sensors :ROTFL:
One system is dumb and the other is smart :-)r

X2 to Joe's comment - check the 05 and 06 parts books on Sams NOOB guide and you will find 2 different EVIC parts numbers plus there is another chat about this at http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread. ... 753&page=2

Rather odd as I don't seem to be able to find any Owner's Manual reference to the "less smart" version of the EVIC although I may have overlooked it.

Just for reference the EVIC tire pressure sensor message won't work (don't know what it displays) unless 1) you have the wheel sensors installed; 2) the wheel sensor batteries have power; 3) the sensors are trained to read properly (apparently involves a magnetic tool at the tire place); and 4) the sensors apparently, per chat, don't work if you have steel wheels.

Thanks Papa and Joe!

My CRD went through something just like Mikey's did recently with the spare tire. Wrestled off the cover and sure enough, 21PSI. Got it up to 33PSI and all is well again.

I'll check out these threads that you have pointed out. Thanks again.

SO if I am to understand this correctly, some evics can read the tire pressures and some cannot.

For those evic modules that do not have the TPS sensors, they only early warning available is a light on the dash?

Is this correct?

racertracer - as I understand it in order to get any tire pressure signal the wheels must be aluminum and tire pressure sensor valve assemblies must be installed. Then if you have the "smart" EVIC you can see actual individual tire pressure on the EVIC but if you have the "dumb" EVIC you cannot see individual tire pressure although you do get a low pressure warning which does not show which tire is low and I'm not sure if that warning is on the EVIC or instrument panel.

Bottom line is the tire sending units are required in either case.

There are 2 types of TPMS systems. 1- What might be call "not smart" is control only by the ECM. I works by using the speed at each wheel with out any sensors. the ECM will look at a slower (smaller radius) tire and reported as it is low or flat and turn on the cluster light.
2- "smart" Is the one we all have and it works with the sensors, which are powered by a battery and connected to a module in the cabin via 315MHz wireless system. It is a much more accurate system but it is also prompt to problems as the sensors are electronic pieces of equipment in a very harsh environment (inside the wheel).
95% of cars have the second system since 2005.

A few of misunderstandings here!

First the systems available on the 06 the sensors do not need to be trained. I have a 06 and have replaced one. and you can take the tires and wheels and mix them all up and everything works.
Second there is only one type of sensor for the US and it works with BOTH the smart and dumb systems.
Third. Both systems have sensors in the wheels. I have the "dumb" or less smart one and it tells me when the spare is low. No way the ECM can tell that :ROTFL:
Forth a message appears in the odometer section saying something about low tire in addition to the yellow horse shoe symbol.

First you'll need the EVIC that supports the added functions. Then it might have to be programmed.
I looked into adding a EVIC to mine and found them to be expensive and then they are incorrectly offered on e-bay with wrong information (works on 02-08 Liberty) and getting the part number of the available units is almost totally impossible.

I tried finding one locally but that was a dead end. You can rule out some of them by looking at the button and screen configuration but even if it looks right then you need the part number to determine what functions it has.
There's lots of confusion on what EVICS work and those that don't. Here's a site with general information where it also statess that for 05 and on "training" is not necessary.

For those that are interested in adding an EVIC geordi's signature indicates that he has done so. I presume successfully although I did not check with him on that when I was at his location a couple of months back.

Adding one is not the problem. It's finding one that has the features you want then will it work in the CRD. The ones from later Grand cherokees after 05 as I remember have the most features.

Well, from everything that I have read, not only does it sound confusing, expensive and likely not worth it. On the wholesale mopar.com website it says the following:

P/N 56010527AD (w/o TPMS?) was superseded by P/N 56010527AE and is $292.82.

P/N 56010520AD (w/TPMS?) was superseded by P/N 56010520AE and is $463.43.

Chances of finding one is the boneyard is likely slim to none.

I think that I'll just stick to keeping a tire gauge in the glove box!

Not my area of expertise and I already have an EVIC so don't need one nor do I have an opinion on how much trouble the install is. So why am I posting. Just to note that the EVIC is a KJ option not a KJ CRD option so finding one in a bone yard may not be all that hard especially if you can find a bone yard with good computer access to the national used parts inventory. Now distinguishing the smart one from the less smart one may be difficult unless the part # is printed on the unit.

I have been a little distracted lately, so I haven't jumped in on this one until now. Several things I can comment on or clear up:

The EVIC unit itself is *mostly* the same across much of the Chrysler line. The housing is what is different, the screen and buttons are able to be unscrewed. IIRC, the one that I installed came from either a Durango or a Grand Cherokee, not a KJ.

I had to buy three of the things to get one that had the TPMS function, and again, IIRC... Only the versions with "Homelink" and the three extra buttons have this. On the plus side, if it HAS the homelink buttons, the TPMS functionality is there also. You cannot get Homelink without the TPMS.

The different part numbers and their compatibility seem to all revolve around the function of the outside air temperature sensor. Everything else comes through the normal data lines, like any other OBD scanner.

The installation requires 2 wires run to the OBD port, and power and ground. (4 wires). All information is generated by the ECM, BCM, and the options coded within.

This is the big one: I have the TPMS capable unit. The *FIRST* time it was powered up, it displayed the screen with the image of the vehicle, and 5 tire pressure locations with numbers. The screen then went away, and has not reappeared since. Someone told me several years ago when I was doing the install that it isn't the tire sensors (they are all the same) but it is within the BCM and the option coding that enables this functionality. It was suggested that a DRBIII scanner might be able to reprogram the options, I have been unsuccessful in locating a DRBIII scanner to make the attempt.

***NOTE*** Even though I cannot display the active tire pressures, I have been told that the max it would display is 50 psi anyway. ALSO, the EVIC ***DOES*** display if one of the tires is low, just not which one. Much of the information that might be shown on the odometer display instead shows on the EVIC - Clearly the BCM knows that it is there.

On my previous vehicle, a Jetta TDI, the Vag-Com software had the ability to log in to several function areas and "adapt" them by changing a number here and there. This had the function of enabling any of the special options that maybe the vehicle didn't have from the factory. I can't recall exactly what I changed, but I know that when I changed the headlamp switch, there was a change in the computer b/c I added functionality that my TDI didn't have before.

I have another EVIC unit currently (one of the three that I purchased) that will work perfectly with our CRD and temperature sensor... But it does not have the TPMS screen. I'm willing to sell it for $55 shipped. It will most likely do exactly what my current EVIC does - Display when there is a low tire or any other system message, in addition to the other normal EVIC functions.
