Have any of you replaced the CV joint on the TC side of the front shaft? My boot has been out for quite some time, and I just found out there are kits available to buy rather than the WHOLE shaft for hundreds of dollars.

I see that driveshaftparts.com (https://www.driveshaftparts.com/index.p ... a8c76f8bfa) has it for $70. I wasn't sure if this works for our Jeep (does the CRD have the same shaft as the gasser?) When I follow the links on Autozone and NAPA websites, they list the kit for $170 each. Why the $100 difference in price? Should I buy the $70 part? Is it the same?

Thanks

BigMontana,

I've seen some CV joints being cleaned out by mechanics using brake cleaner and repacking them with grease then replacing the plastic boot and loktite glueing it together........ doing the job without ever removing the joint.

The new boot has a slit that allows you to slide it over the CV joint and then snaps together at the same location where it is glued with loktite.

It works if you can get at it and the joint isn't too far gone.

Any mechanics out there that have done this?

I'm pretty sure that mine is too far gone. I get a loud-ish whine when in 4wheel. It goes away when I turn it off. It's been two years since the boot was ripped, and I've been packing it with grease for that whole time. I would say it was a good run.

My real question centers around why there is such a large price difference. The pictures seem the same, so i don't understand why one costs $100 more.

Not going to happen on the driveshaft,a CV axle yes but not a driveshaft.

Last I heard there was only one manufacture of the drive shaft cv heads so they all should be the same. I have used one and they work great. Pretty sure I paid 70.00 for the one i got.

Thanks,

That would make sense. My question was a little rushed. I guess I wanted to know if anyone went with driveshaftparts.com and got the kit that went with our Jeep. I bought mine from a local parts place in Michigan, and I paid $162 for the kit. I really wanted to buy the kit for $70 from the company in Florida, but the site didn't list which Jeep it was for. Perhaps all Jeeps from 2005 have the same front shaft kit, but Autozone listed different part numbers for the Grand and the KJ. I didn't want to wait so perhaps I just lost $100. At least I didn't buy the whole shaft I guess.

I will post if there are any problems with the Dorman kit.
