Now with all of that said, yes, if I were forced to guess, I would guess you have a bad battery, but I would not assume that there are no other faults in the charging system. Check charging voltage. then check connections and grounds, Chronic undercharging EATS batteries.

If you can, try checking the voltage at idle with everything turned on, lights, radio cranked, fan on high, plug-in devices, etc. If it's still 14.2, then you probably only have a bad battery. I have heard that AGM batteries do not react well to high current, either flow or charge; it may be that this battery is not a good match for the load of cranking a diesel.

Ok, test done, I turned the fan on max, head lights on high beam, rear defroster, all cabin lights and the stereo blasting, car running on idle and I still get 14.2 Volts, so, my best guess, as you suggested, is that I have a crappy one year old Optima which could die on my anytime :grim:
I went by Sears to check on the P1 that everyone seems to be very happy with; it's about $220, holy molly..... What I might do is return the Napa I bought for my Van (have not installed yet) take the Optima and put it in the van and then put a new P1 on the Jeep. I cannot afford to be left on the side of the road somewhere, but, I also cannot afford $350 in batteries in a two week period....
Thank you for your help, much appreciated !!!!

I just bought a Sears P-1 battery online because they were offering $40 off until tomorrow. I figured now is as good a time as any to buy it since I'm already having to jump start the old Red Top Optima.

I couldn't find a battery for the Liberty CRD in Costco's cross-reference here in Canada.
Are you using the gasser battery?

Ignore the cross reference and look at the specs. The Costco fitment 34 battery is 795 CCA and our CRD requires 800 CCA. I'm guessing the cross-reference is automatically generated and we miss it by 5 CCA . I'm not going to loose any sleep over 0.6%.

I checked the cross-reference again and sure enough it says 600 CCA but the battery shows 795 CCA. Thanks dirtmover, I had missed this one.

Costco battery bought, $89.99.

I've been running the costco battery for few months. It starts the jeep way better than the original red top ever did. I paid $79.99 here in NORCAL. You won't be disappointed.

I'm running a costco battery for at least a year perhaps two...don't recall when I installed it.

So far, it has done fine down to -2 deg F this winter. I've got a weak glow plug because one cylinder won't fire right away but my costco battery doesn't mind the slightly extra long crank times in the winter.
