I've been checking out this board for a couple months now after discovering the CRD. Just found one fairly local to me and went to the dealer today to look at it. It's a 2006 with around 75000mi. Here's what I know: Carfax shows two owners, first owner appeared to regularly take it to the dealer for service and drove under 10k mi a year. During the first 4 years of life it's had the EGR replaced twice (pretty standard for these from what I've read here), lower ball joints replaced, PCV valve replaced and very regular oil changes. The second owner (end 2010-end 2011) put about 30k mi on it and didn't leave any other trail on carfax.

So I took the truck on test drive and looked around under the hood a little bit. EVIC indicated about 12mpg, but i'm not sure how much it's been driven etc. The turbo side CAC hose definitely had some oil on the bottom of the front of it (enough to coat my hand pretty well when I felt around it). The drive side CAC hose didn't feel bad or have anything noticeable. I couldn't get into it to pull the MAP or anything. I did notice it had the old fuel head (no blue heater plug?).

The dealer showed my what they have done to the car since they took it on trade in: just replaced the turbo side hose (55038729AA). That's the hose that I noticed a lot of oil around... Did I miss something or maybe they just have a sloppy mechanic? Any other things I should look out for or be aware of? CEL was not on, but I didn't check to see if it came on when I started it up. They're looking for $14,300, opinions? Thanks a lot.

(Just to be realistic about my CRD expectations: I'm looking to tow a #3500 sailboat and commute about 50mi a day. I'm mechanically inclined but by no means a professional)

I'm not far from Va either..

any codes?

do you like to work on your own cars? a Jeep Crd will require more work than others.

does it have a lift pump?
SERG?
GDE tunes?
euro TC?
provent?

at a minimum..
SERG and provent(just stop the crankcase vent from going back into the intake)
lift pump..next mod..

does it have a 2nd gen fuel head..if not, plan on replacing it with a 2nd gen or something else like racor.

you have about 25k miles before a timing belt is due..think about 1k or more if you have someone else do it.
if the timing belt breaks..not good think 2-3K in parts..

doubt me if you like..start reading..when you get to page 150 of posts..I think you might have a different opinion.
I love my wife jeep..there are some design issues that Jeep didn't address/fix/couldn't..they're your problem now.

when it runs..its great..I wish my 2500 diesel pickup had the same attitude, when empty, oh that would be nice..it don't it could but its only a 47re tranny..stock I think..

you should also check for rust. Look under the truck and see how it looks. Also check the door wells and the rear brake light - if you see paint bubbles it's rust.

Ok, thanks for the input everyone. This one is at a dealer and therefore has no gde tune or anything aftermarket, totally stock as far as I can tell. It has the old style fuel head (pretty sure) and potentially old turbo hoses. I believe I will take the proximity to the timing belt/water pump replacement into effect when/if I make an offer.

As far as rust I looked around and didn't notice anything.

I plan on going back again for another drive and would like to have some more specific things to check for?? Ie temp (indicating stuck thermostat), etc.... Any other ideas? Thanks for the advice so far.

Also, about the used CRD in NY, looks really nice but I think its more than what Im in for, plus I really need the factory tow package. Thanks though.

Unless the t-stat has been replaced then the needle is probably left of center so will have to replace. Agree with others...get the EGR out of the loop by GDE or SEGR, install a Provent, ensure you have a fresh fuel filter, and yes...at 100k miles do a t-belt and w-pump. Assume the oil has been changed regularly with 5-30 M1 turbo diesel synthetic.
