JeepDan, I'm glad you tried the crank position sensor. I put one in a couple weeks ago and it has been running great ever since. We just drove over 1000 miles last weekend without any issues. I bench tested my old one as well. It seemed fine when cold, but once i warmed it up the resistance skyrocketed. Well I'm sure we'll have some other tricky problems with this little diesel.

I'm happy that you found your gremlin quickly :)
I love my CRD, but it will be relaxing and refreshing, to go back to restoring my two 56 YEAR OLD Willys jeep pickup trucks :SOMBRERO:

Went with the cummins instead of a toyota diesel, easier to find parts and more reliable.
The sound is not as bad as you would think. I can hear the radio just fine, with two little 6x9's in the very back. It drives great and the torque is amazing. I know it's not a jeep, but I had to show it off a little.

That's a beautiful tough tin can that in time will uproot your wisdom tooth! Did you install the 4BT?

Unfortunately I work to much to have the time to do the work, but I did have it put in.
I wondered where my wisdom teeth went!

Trying to get the libby in the shop this am, we'll see.

Not what I expected, but good to know none-the-less. I was really hoping for a quick check for troubleshooting.

Dan, after alot of frustrations like yours where the engine dies or won't start, many owners of the 7.3 Powerstroke diesel keep a cps in the glovebox with a 10 mm box wrench to swap out the sensor because it seems to cause many gremlins.

Hi Bob, Good to here from you :)
Good idea. I should add one to my CRD survival kit. Not an easy part to replace on the CRD though.
It is a lay in the dirt with a flash light job. :x
A 10mm socket and extensions are needed to remove a heat shield, a 8mm socket is needed to remove a wiring connector bracket, and a metric allen wrench is also required for the sensor hold down bolt, can't remember the size.
At least you don't have to loosen the exhaust pipe from the turbo as the FSM tells you to.

Had the crankshaft sensor installed on Friday, and have been driving it through today.
It will finally start when hot, but it takes 4 to 7 times of trying.
I have an air temperature sensor to install next. Hope it will make it start a little easier.

mozzio, did you get around to installing the engine coolant temperature sensor yet?

No. At the mechanics advice and for the benefit of others on the forum I planned on installing things one at a time. Thought we could get a difinitive answer that way.
Did you do the coolant sensor when you replaced the crankshaft sensor?

Yes, during the same time as the crank sensor.
I agree with your mechanic's reasoning, but I didn't follow it. We needed it fixed ASP for my daughter to drive to work. Family wasn't going to put up with a wait and see attitude.

Well after scratching my head for hours, reading through numerous posts here, and replacing almost a dozen parts it seems I am no better off than before.
Replaced the crank sensor and it seemed fine for two days. replaced the engine coolant temp sensor and it wouldn't start after a short trip this afternoon. I dont think the sensor was bad, but don't know how to tell.
I am at a loss of what to do/try next. The mechaniic I am working with is a close friend and suggets "getting rid of it". Not really a good option for me. I really like the way it runs, when it's running.
I can say that after replacing the crank sensor it would start but I had to crank it 3 or 4 times.
If anyone has any advice to offer, now would be the time to speak up.

There are six pages on this thread, would you mind giving us a list of parts replaced so far?

It may help fire a seldom-used synapse for someone.

Thanks - Mark
