I have an 05 KJ Renegade with a 6 speed manual. Currently it is stock except for mopar intake and mamba moab copys. I do a lot of interstate driving and can set the cruise at 70 and the jeep pulls all hills, some steep, without an issue or a downshift required. If I lift it and install 245/75R16 tires, will I need to downshift on hills on the interstate? This would suck as I would be downshifting a lot and losing cruise. Pennsylvania highways are no where close to being flat.

Thanks

I have the 6right speed with 32" tires ...I'm guessing that you'll have to downshift on the steeper hill but maybe not. I still have a lot of power even with the taller tires.

Have you ever had to downshift when on the interstate?

i too have a lifted 6 speed and live in PA.

-on the highway with stock 3.55 gears and 265/75/16 tires with alum. wheels i did have to downshift for long hills.. or steep hills.. but hardly ever.
-on the highway with stock 3.55 gears and 265/75/16 tires with steel wheels i did have to downshift for long hills.. or steep hills.. quiet frequently.
-on the highway with stock 3.55 gears and 245/75/16 tires with alum. wheels hardly ever had to downshift.
-on the highway with 4.10 gears and 265/75/16 tires with steel wheels i never had to downshift on the highway.
-on the highway with 4.10 gears and 31x10.5/15 tires with steel wheels i never have to downshift ever..and it will pull up any hill with 6th.

side note - with 3.55's and 265/75/16's with steel wheels i was getting 13-14mpg. with 4.10's i get 18-19mpg (20 all highway)... and with the 4.10's and 31x10.5 15's with steel wheels i recently got 22mpg on all highway :)

Some come around real quick, others still want to argue the point
but they all will come around sooner or later :ROTFL:

hey now!

haha... you can for sure run a 265/75/16 tire with steel wheels and a 6 speed with 3.55 (stock) gears. i did it for 40k miles..

then when i could afford it... i went to 4.10's. it is A TON better.. but stock gearing is 'ok' and has plenty of power. So to the original poster... 245/75/16's will effect your power... but by NO means make it undriveable!

I have 4.10s sitting in a box until I can get some cash to get them installed.
I have no issues with my 31s and steelies.
I can't wait! until I can drive my truck with the new gears. :)

I think its easier with the manual because since you're choosing the gear, you're always in the correct gear.
We don't have to worry about the transmission constantly downshifting trying to find the correct gear.

Now you got me excited, haha.

Wow, perfect answer. That was exactly what I was looking for. No excuse now not to lift the KJ.

Thanks for all the answers

Does this data translate to improvements for us auto drivers?

You bet it does, even more so in some ways
with 32s and 3.73s I couldn't use overdrive at all
32s/4.10s its like driving a stocker only better

Thanks again Tom. Will I also need to look at having my computer reprogrammed and speedo gear changed? I just read my 07 is a little different in that it's on the ABS system so only a dealer can adjust speedo. Is that correct? I just want to make sure if I put out the expense for 4.10's I get the most MPG improvement I can but I hate the thought of needing the dealer to do the work.
