is this normal

I have the inline T-stat on my crd It is a 195 with a 1/8 hole drilled in it but when going down a hill or idling for a bit it drops to this should I bye another one and not drill a hole in it?

Cover your grille. Our little 4 bangers don't produce enough heat to stay warmed up. The engine will never reach 195 at idle while not moving. Now coast down a hill in the winter, you will lose heat fast with all that cold air flow through the engine compartment.

This is in 25-50 degree weather tho is that normal?

1/8 is probably too big a hole. I didn't drill anything on mine and they run just fine.

4x4kingx889 - I've advocated a hole to allow a bit of circulation past the inline to ensure smooth opening otherwise some have seen a tendancey to temperature spike before the inline opens. That said most seem to be using a hole smaller than 1/8" or making do with no added hole if the tstat skirt comes with the funny little "toggle" in a hole. I don't think it should drop like that assuming 1) reasonable ambient temp (a really low ambient might make this happen) and 2) that the engine is well and truly warmed up (the inline might close and cause that reading if the coolant temp was right at the edge). Of course it's not impossible that you got a bad in line tstat. I don't know about today's tstats but back in the day bad out of the box tstats did happen so it was a good idea to do a test in a pot of water with a candy thermometer to make sure the tstat opened/closed at the correct temps.

just put in a new tstat without out hole and temp is good but jumps all the way till red when going up hills should I drill a hole or is it something else

I drilled a 5_64 hole in it and so far it seems good! And I would like to price of a inline over the OEM

Then how come so many people recommend the inline?

Because they're typically cheap. Yes the stock Tstat is expensive, but it also works properly.
