Need buying advice.

Hey Guys was looking for some advice. Hopefully this is the right place to post. I have had an interest in getting CRD LIberty for awhile now and GMCTD who I knew from another forum had sent me here awhile back. Well I found a nice 2006 with 81k miles on it locally. What what is the "Quick Start" guide to what I should know and look for with it ? I want decent mpg, 4wd . I am not concerned about making alot of performance, just reliablity. From what I have read the TCC is weak. What would be the signs of this ? Also if the 2006 has the F37 flash does that matter for what I am using it for ? Can it be reflashed ? I saw a thread on Inmotion but did not have time to read it all. Basically I'm looking for newb's guide to buying a used one and things I should expect to plan for. They want 11k for it. I am a diesel truck mechanic but not so up to date on electronic stuff. Mostly work on IDI and 2 stroke diesels. Also what is the real world mpg on these ?

Nope. It's at a used car lot which always makes me nervous. I read the Noobguide but can't figure out how to attach a pic. So basically If the tranny doesnt shudder the thing is probably ok save for some house cleaning. What real world MPGs are these things getting ?

I run the full torque GDE tune and get an average of 28.5 miles a gallon with 70% of those miles being freeway miles @ 68 mph and 2000rpm.

I run WVO in my and get 150 mpg of diesel purchased. But that is cheating. It costs me .05 cents per gallon to filter the grease. I get over 20 on the grease that is less efficeint than the diesel. Unless you are on it all the time you should get more than 20. 22 to 28 is the normal range.

For things to consider when buying check out the discussion at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64465&p=711210&hilit=+purchase#p711210 to which I would add that after purchase I'd figure on immediately changing the oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid and on the latter 2 do a flush if possible or if not do a fill then drive for a bit and do a drain and refill. The idea is that unless you have proof to the contrary those fluids may not be the correct ones. Oil=diesel rated full synthetic such as Shell Rotella T6 5W-40; antifreeze=HOAT only (no "universal") such as Zerex G-05 (available at NAPA), Mopar, or Motorcraft Gold Premium; transmission=ATF+4

Real world mpg will vary depending on winter vs. summer fuel blend, AC use, in town/hwy, speed on hwy, etc. Without GDE tune figure about 18/28 for shortish in town and hwy speeds ca. 62 or 1800rpm. With GDE tune figure 10-20% better.

Thanks. I gotta go over this thing carefully. it seems a little too cheap and the salesman sounded shady to start with but the price is pretty good form what I have seen and there are not an abundance of these around. It just seems like the total package if it can be made to work good. I mean short of a VW TDI what else can get that mpg and still offer a vehichle that is useful as an SUV. A CUCV M1009 Blazer with a 6.2 with an OD tranny can get mid 20's from what I have heard. I have a 6.5td Suburban right now that is awful. I do 60 miles a day and it gets about 15.5 average so I need better and the CRD is very appealing. I test drove one about 2 yrs ago on a used car lot and absolutley loved it. So say worst case scenario, I get screwed on it , pretty much the worse I can expect is tghe tranny is shot which I should be able to get a reasonable feel for it's health from an extensive test drive. Anybody had to do a tranny yet ? How much ?
This truck seems to be about 2-3k under value so I guess I could budget for that and hope to not need it.

BTW how obvious is the shudder ? I am not a finicky driver as I drive wrung out junk most of my life so I don't always notice "little things" so will it be obvious or do I really need to pay attention for it ? Also does the GDE tune ingore the ERG circut if I unplug the MAF sensor ??

I have no opinion on shudder never having experienced it. With the GDE tune you leave the MAF plugged in and the tune reduces EGR function to a bare minimum if that.

FYI "shady" folks have been known to hide a CEL by disabling dash lights. Go to Sams NOOB guide and download a copy of the owners manual and print out the instrument panel light key. With that in hand you can go to the vehicle and run an instrument cluster test by holding the trip odometer button while turning the ignition on but not all the way to starting the engine. When 1st triggered all the warning lights will come on including the glow plug light and then each of the analog gauges will do odd things with the needles (e.g. placing the needle in different positions to verify calibration). If any of the lights don't work be very suspicious. It's not impossible for the LED bulbs to burn out but...

Also you might want to check for a local parts or service place that has a compatable code reader and run it by to see if there are any stored codes. If asking can you do that causes the seller to go into orbit also be very suspicious.

oh yeah, I have an OBD2 reader which I fully intend to bring with me. Infact I have the enhanced version of Carcode which may even work with it bi directionally.

My over all average is 20 since day one. Since my GDE full torque tune and upgraded TCM it's been from 22-24 mostly intown. On a trip in november 28, 29 and one tank of 30 MPG driving a real per my GPS 70 mgh Note the speedometers on these are 6% over with stock tires and around 5% under on the odometer (total miles driven)
Most CRD's both 05 and 06 got the F37 ax that detuned the engine (ecm) and raised the shift points (TCM) about 5 mph in all gears. GDE has two Eco tunes. One for the TC that was used in all made since 11/05 that was the replacement the earlier ones that were upgraded to. And a "Full Torque Eco tune" for for those with improved TC's like a Sun coast or the so called "Euro TC" Chrysler introduced for the 08 and on Export CRD's.

Hi Aces, I'm another guy from DP and DTR. I sold my '97 Sub and replaced it with an '06 Liberty CRD. I miss the size of the Sub at times but I enjoy driving the Liberty more than I thought I would, have put a lot of highway miles on and it's comfortable and smooth, only turns 2,200 rpm at 73 mph. I've towed boats, around 4,000 lbs., and it tows very well, power from a stop is similar to the 6.5 (believe it or not!), though of course the 6.5 can handle heavier loads better and the little CRD requires a lot more care when towing over the bigger 3/4 ton trucks.

I installed the GDE full torque eco tune, it's a huge improvement over stock. I get 28-29 if all highway, 25-27 mixed driving, has dropped 3-4 mpg in winter driving.

I don't agree that $11,000 is well below market, I bought mine with similar mileage for about that price 8 months ago. There aren't many around, but they aren't well understood either, a lot of people don't realize the capability of them. The TC shudder is very noticable, I'm just beginning to get it when I accelerate uphill at low rpm without a downshift. Hope this helps!

I just bought mine a few weeks ago and I paid 9500 for it. Its an 05 sport with 91xxx miles on it. Very clean belonged to and older couple and I bought it from a used dealership. So far I love mine. It is completely stock I get around 20mpg in town but I am on a fire dept so running it open isn't unusual plus lots of idle time. Took a small trip the other day got around 26. Really a great rig!

So basically once it gets the shudder, it's time for a TC pronto. Being that this one I am looking at is an 06 it most liely has the f37 recall ? Now I have misunderstood some of what I read in the noob sticky. did the 06 come with a better tc or is it the same deal as an 05 ?

I guess I should say TTS rather than DTR. I look around both places now and then but don't post anymore, once the 6.5 was gone I didn't really need to be there, though I did enjoy the discussions. When it comes to any car, but I think diesels in particular, you have to go to the source with the most experience and knowledge of YOUR vehicle.

I'm new, not an expert by any stretch, so take this with a grain of salt, but .... if you're not towing much, I think you can live with some shudder for a while, it isn't like you have to run to the shop to get a TC installed. I'm experiencing a very slight amount at this point. I'll get mine replaced because I know I'll be towing a lot more when May comes along, but right now it isn't getting any worse and I put quite a few miles on.

I believe the TC is the same for '05 and '06, when you replace it you either get the euro version (that's what I'm going to do) or a more expensive aftermarket one.

I talked to keith at gde awhile back. I don't think he wants me to quote it since every case is different but he basically said u can drive for awhile with slight shudder. He told me that he drove his for a year with shudder before he changed it.

So op, if this thing has shudder it is pretty common with these it is not dyer need to swap tc's right away
