Hi Team CRD,

Yesterday on my way to work, I lost most of my boost. I didn't hear any loud pop (like last time), but there is a loud 'rush' of air when the turbo is engaged. My immediate thought was a loose/broken intercooler hose or a major vacuum leak. I also noticed that I had more-than-normal amounts of smoke from the exhaust.

I limped the car to Autozone and had them pull the codes and the only one was the P0299. I got the Jeep home and checked the following:
* Air intake hose from the air box (no cracks or breaks)
* Air out hose from the turbo to the IC (no cracks or breaks)
* The turbo, spun freely and had very little movement, about the same as when I installed it a year ago
* The vacuum lines that were all just port of the turbo. All of those looked okay. No holes or cracks
* I pulled the EGR off (the plastic thing on top of the engine, that's the EGR, right?). I didn't really know what I was looking for.

I realized this morning that I didn't check the other IC hose, from the cooler to the intake manifold, which I assume is on the other side of the IC.

Now if I don't have any other codes, it seems that this would strictly be a mechanical problem (broken hose or leaky IC) right? I'd assume that if the MAF or EGR were on the fritz, I would have more codes. But the extra smoke has me wondering. I actually have a boost guage I could hook up and check the vacuum/boost levels if that's helpful.

I will check the other hose this afternoon, but I wanted to get additional thoughts. This is my only 'running' vehicle (:

You need to thoroughly check both boost hoses. This sounds like a classic boost hose leak.

X2 on turbo>intercooler>engine hoses with the addition of neither of those hoses can be check on the engine. They both have to be removed and the mesh cover pulled off and then carefully inspected particularly on the bottom (problems range from small holes to obvious rips). As for the airbox to turbo hose it would not provide this sypmptom but again the typical tear is very hard to see on the vehicle as it's right next to the clamp at the turbo.

Plastic thing is not EGR. EGR is low down on drivers side of engine block and barely visible looking past the fuel filter. If you took the plastic engine cover off and pulled a plastic thing that looks like a hockey puck with a hose off of it that's the CCV valve and the hose is what dumps oil into the system just upstream of the turbo and causes the hose rot.

Probably not related given the whoosh but fyi see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=61240 for another cause of a P0299 code.

Its the hose from the IC to the intake manifold. I just pulled that sucker off and there's this obvious 1"+ tear near the clamp.

Thanks for the help. Now I gotta see if someone here in town has one (:

X2+ on Samcos. When you do only 2 things to pay attention to: 1) on the end of the hose that fits to the plastic inlet/outlet on the intercooler be sure the hose is all the way on the fitting and the worm clamp is also then run the clamp down snug not godzilla run the vehicle a day or 2 and double check tightness (those plastic fittings won't crush unless you really godzilla the clamp UNLESS the clamp is right on the outer edge of the fitting; applies to OEM hoses also) and 2) the woven mesh on the exterior of the OEM hoses provides a tiny bit of abrasion protection but won't fit the larger diameter Samcos so pay attention to making sure the Samcos are not rubbing on anything and if they do just twist the ends, before clamping down, so there is clearance (yes there is plenty of room to do so)

Awesome, thanks guys. I just ordered a set. After reading a bit more today, I think I need to do some modifications (elephant hose) to keep the oil out of the system. I'll probably tackle this when I get the hoses.

Did you pull the lower end of the airbox to turbo hose to check for a rip at the turbo end? If not best do so when you install the Samcos. Note what I said about plastic fittings on the Samco install goes double for the airbox to turbo hose where it mounts to the airbox as I and at least one other already found out by not having things all the way on when tightened down.

No flaming please but IMHO after you get Samcos if you have a GDE tune the elephant is not really needed as the Samcos are impervious to oil and the GDE tune kills the EGR and MAP sensor soot problem. That said it will protect the airbox to turbo hose. I don't have the elephant hose mode but if I was to do something like that I'm not fond of the notion of dumping dribbles of oil on the ground so I'd probably install a catch filter like a Provent, the cyclonic separator discussed at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64217 , or one of the homemade jobs that can be drained from time to time.
