My hose hasn't failed yet, but based on the oil seepage I have I would order a Samco replacement TODAY if it was available.

Would design of these hoses be different or more difficult due to the fact that that are under negative pressure (being pre-turbo) vs the existing Samco hoses that are under positive pressure (post-turbo)? You'll notice that the OEM hose has reinforcing "ribs" on it. I suspect that these are to keep it from crushing inward when its under vacuum. If you combine our turbo at WOT with a dirty air filter, there is a pretty significant vacuum developed in this hose.

The maximum inlet negative pressure is less than 1 psi per this link:

I suspect that the ribs are more for movement. The engine shakes and moves so that "accordion" section allows the hose to flex and move that little bit. Any replacement would need to be designed with that in mind.

Wow, thanks for this thread everyone. Went out and checked - hose is torn at the same place as the original poster. My air filter hasn't been getting very much oil in the 3k I've put on since purchase, which I've always been surprised about. Have a feeling the air has been pulling though this tear. Many thanks for passing this along, just wished I had caught it sooner.

You can get the new Hose from Pro Chrylser Jeep on 104th in westminster for about $43 if you ask for the shop price, if they try to tell you no on the shop price I can place the order through them with my account and you can pick it up and pay for it.

They had one in stock a couple of weeks ago when I needed it, might still have it or be able to get one for you quickly.

My hose was in good condition. I wrapped the vulnerable point with some self-fusing silicone tape for reinforcement. However, when I tried to get the hose back on the turbo it wouldn't slip on. The access is poor for forcing the hose on. Not sure whether the tape is the problem or if it would also be difficult without it. Gave up on it 'til the morning. I may soak the hose in some hot water to see if that helps.
Anyone else have this problem? Also broke off one of the air box prongs trying to remove the box.
3M Structural Adhesive would fix that, but I'm out of it. Hate to pay $25 for some small tubes, but it's the best adhesive for plastic that I've found.

Heating the hose end didn't help. Cut the tape off and the hose slipped right on. Might have overdone the tape wrapping.

Bit of a tight reach but I forced my hand down there.
So, being in the 4 guys group, I can still say it is okay.

Other, Replaced mine at at 78,000 miles as a preventative move after reading on this forum of failures. Original was soft at the turbo but not torn yet. No EHM or Provent used. Haven't checked Liberty CRD #2 yet. I will, as soon as the timing belt parts come in. Glad that I ordered two inlet hoses last year :)

Question,

I checked mine this past week and noted no damage, yet. (and voted appropriately)

I really don't like the plastic hoses at all really. So, don't laugh, but what if there was a metallic hose like a dryer vent style with perhaps a rubber type grommet on the turbo side?

Kinda like this one from a Volvo???

Image

But of course the proper diameter. Forget the dirty CCV port and do the EHM.

Maybe Samco would just be easier.

I install a set of Samco lately and found out my inlet turbo hose look exactly like the pic in Sir Sam first post of this thread. Just one little difference...The "Stealer" asking price here in Canada...$92

The previous owner of my CRD ran the stock CCV for 76,000 miles. I found this exact problem a week after I bought it. I've been using the EHM since then and have had no problems. It's only been 12,000 miles since the new hose and EHM, but it seemed to do the trick.

My theory: The oil "pooling" up at the bottom of the hose causes it to fail. However, you could cause premature failure with the EHM or provent if you accidentally tighten the hose clamp on the turbo before attaching the hose to the airbox. That might put a twisting motion on the hose, causing it too much stress.

I would be interested in a permanent fix to this issue and will be looking into options. I would buy a Samco hose tomorrow if it were available; I'd much rather avoid problems than react to them.

IIRC Eurekaboy had a nice presentation on airbox and inlet piping modifications.

Add my wife's CRD to the list of split intake tubes. I was taking it off to install the BMW oil/air separator and found the bottom third of it split.

We bought the vehicle with 25,000mi, and ran the EHM for most of the time after that (now has 70,000), but the damage must have already been done. Who knows how many miles we've been sucking unfiltered air into the turbo. I will probably try to fab a heat shield for the new one to protect it from exhaust manifold heat.
