I am tired of the CEL, being on due to the EGR! I would rather replace it with an SEGR, because I drive too much for the CEL to not function properly, but don't know how to get my hands on one? Can anyone help? I am in BC Canada.

Thanks!

Check with Turbo Tim - he invented them and may have some kits remaining. Don't know if they're assembled or not tho. Are you handy with a soldering iron / electronics assembly?

I got an unassembled SEGR that I bought a week before I got my GDE. $100 will do and that will include the shipping in the US.

If there is enough interest, I can look into making another run of PCBs and parts. I think I'd need at least 10 people to commit.

Hi Guys! My name is Mark and I'm a new guy so forgive any ignorance that I may start to spew here.
I got my wife an '05 crd about 2 years ago with 70,000 mi. the thing has run great with zero problems til now (128,000mi). Last night the turbo went out on it. Its going to be a new turbo... the barings are gone, there is motor oil coming out the air intake, the impeller vanes have been rubbing up on the housing so... yeah she's toast.
Any ways, already got her apart and new parts set to be ordered on monday, she should be in good shape in a few days. The questions I have for you guys is about this EGR thing...
I'm generally aware of the EGR problem and am looking for a solution especially since I laready have the thing torn apart.
Can someone tell me what this SEGR is that you all are talking about. What does it do? How does it work? Will it fix the EGR issues? Your looking for 10 people to commit to buying one? Maybe I could be one of the 10....

Welcome and if you have not already done so read Sam's NOOB guide and also if you have not already done so don't drive that thing one more inch until you put a new timing belt on it; anything past the 100,000 mile change interval is an invitation to expensive disaster.

Now to your question. The EGR is a kludge and gets clogged up with soot almost immediately after leaving the showroom floor. Dealers love to replace it even if it has nothing to do with the problem and ignoring the fact that the EGR can be cleaned and restored to full function at least until it clogs again. Fixes:
1. SEGR - early invention and very effective. When wired into the system, at least as I understand it, the SEGR effectively turns the EGR off and tricks the ECU (engine brain) into thinking the EGR is functioning so you never get a CEL. This enables you to either completely ignore the EGR, remove it entirely, or plug the pipe running to it.
2. GDE tune - vastly improves engine performance and fuel economy while at the same time reducing EGR use to near zero. GDE indicates that they have never heard of anyone having an EGR problem on a vehicle with one of their tunes. Full disclosure per my signature I have a GDE tune.
It doesn't hurt to have both as with the GDE tune alone it is my understanding that you cannot plug the EGR without getting a CEL.

Added steps EHM with or without a catch bottle like a provent. This reroutes the oily vapors from the CCV to the ground or a catch bottle instead of into the air box to turbo hose just in front of the turbo and by so doing reduces the amount of oily crud going thru the intercooller, intake, and EGR.

Hey! Thanks for the quick reply and the tip about the timing belt. Had no clue it even had a timing belt let alone that if if fails you get a mess. I'll have to dig around the forum to learn where and how with that...

I'll second the bit about the timing belt. These are interference engines, and if that belt breaks, the valves do a tap-dance on top of your pistons. At the very least, you'll need new lifters and rocker arms, at the worst you get also bent rods and cratered pistons, along with a badly chewed up head. Major disaster, to be sure.

There are actually two EGR valves, one in the intake and also known as a flow control valve, one in the exhaust, and my '05 had both replaced, the exhaust side one 3 times, all by 11,000 miles. Then I put on a Provent. Since then I've added a GDE eco-tune, and highly recommend both. At 148,000 miles now, no more trouble with EGR or gunk buildup in the intake.

And did I recommend also doing the timing belt? You are 28,000 miles into very dangerous territory. You will not be happy if, after you put your wife's CRD back together for the turbo and the belt lunches the rest.

I too would like to get rid of the EGR. If more kits are made I would be in depending on price.

Like most if not all diesel engines the CRD is an interference engine so when timing goes valves and pistons try to occupy the same space. If all goes well the roller bearings on the rockers collapse as designed and all you have to replace are 16 rockers/lifters at ca. $46 per set (1 rocker/1 lifter), maybe a bit less per Wobbly at viewtopic.php?f=35&t=65556 plus labor. See my post down toward the bottom of viewtopic.php?f=5&t=65450&p=721088&hilit=timing+bee#p721088 for some helpful how to links. Don't know where you are but if near another forum member lots of folks are willing to help out and some, like myself, have the tools on hand.

Cost. Minimum DIY $75 for a Gates (T336) from Amazon and about 5-6 hrs of labor, assumes all the spinning things have solid bearings with no slop and not weaping grease. Maximum DIY including just replacing all appropriate spinning things plus the water pump about $600 in parts, depending on how hard you shop, and a decent weekend of work as the water pump adds about 4-5 hours of extra labor. DIY assumes you have the right tools or an effective substitute to pin the cams, flywheel, and lock the cam sprockets in place. Paying to have the complete job done including water pump is reported to run ca. $1,600 but finding a place qualified and willing to do it can be a challenge.

Cost of not doing it take a look at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64557 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=65084

Yeah I'm with the fella a few posts up. Depending on the cost I'd like to put my name on one too. just as a point of comparison can anyone out there tell me how much the GDE ecotune is going for? Oh yeah and what is this "Provent" that the gentleman spoke of?

GDE has a Stage II Turbo upgrade kit that will mesh perfectly with our CRD.
