skid plates

My CRD came with the front skid plate but no others.

I am planning to use this vehicle off road and would like to ask other members who do serious off-road travel what sort of skid plates they use and what they would recommend.

As a younger man I traversed Elephant Hill in Canyonlands NP in an old Cherokee, and would like to do some serious back-country exploring in the CRD. Also, suggestions on winches?

I think the only shop still making real ones is Skid Row for Engine, Tranny, transfer case.

The All-J's Superskid is better for the tranny- but they stopped a couple years ago - you occasionally see them in the sale section. Kilby is the best for the fuel tank.

The OEM front skid - is super thin - even worse than the stock 02-04 skids -although about 07-08 they changed the replacements and made more universal - so the new ones are about the same as the 02-04 version (but with a couple extra mounting holes.

so for offroad - 1st get tow points - front & rear.

4 skids Engine, Tranny, transfer case, fuel tank
OEM is better than nothing - and cheap - but I bent a tranny skid enough to dent the Transmission oil pan - and I wasn't doing anything really special (JL Rockies killed an oil filter and dumped his oil)

Asfir makes a skid combo for the engine tranny/transfer case easily install light and strong and boilers fuel tank skid is one solid piece. I have run all through Moab back country with them with a hiccup plus the look awesome. Almost gives the jeep a pre-runner look.

Wow. So many choices! How do you evaluate them?

A thousand bucks for skid plates is expensive, but if it prevents catastrophic damage out in the back of beyond, I guess it is worth it.

Amplify a bit, someone please, about tow points? I'm assuming these are like the tow hooks on the front of my 4WD ford?

Also, any thoughts on winches? I have had limited experience there, but have heard good things about Warn.

Well there are actually only a few options for full sets but lots of options for certain pieces.

Tow points - mine are in the bumpers - however that's the expensive way.

you can get Tow hooks from the dealership - or

Gris made these for the front - original photos are gone - but as you got through the thread you get the idea - a couple of receiver mounts with holes drilled to line up with the frame mounts

A more robust bumper is a neat idea; I may have to look at that a bit further.
The tow hook idea using hitch inserts is clever; I will look at that further. I do a fair bit of welding and metalworking myself, so that might be a fun project.

Anybody want to weigh in on winches?

Well first of all 8000lb is as low as I would go on a winch. Also a good accessory kit is a must even if you don't own a winch yet. Because people are more willing to help if they can use your tools.

Warn and milemarker are the only two I have any experience with. Both worked flawless but it was a short pull none the less. I will be going with the warn M8000 or 9.5ti if I can find a good used one.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I think I will stick with Warn. There are a lot of off-brands being pushed by various vendors, but I have no confidence in them.
