Today my brother and I successfully finished the water pump and timing belt job :) we were scared to start it but it is all good and runs like a champion. So i hope this jeep doesn't throw anything else at me for awhile. By the way I am at 93xxx miles

I spent about 6 hours on Friday and got aggravated so i went and ate and cracked a cold one. So i came back this morning and then today about 2 hours this morning. The hardest part was getting the darn timing belt on. That's the whole reason I quit the first night. And keeping it in time was scary. Should have done more research before I dove in lol. I have done timing belt jobs before but when the can sprocket came off and there was no pin or key lock I was shocked. Just glad I had lots of Sharpie marks :) I was relieved when i rolled in over by hand and there was no inference and even more elated when i started it and it purred!

I'm looking at doing mine sometime soon, parts are on their way.
Q: so you did not use the locking pins? just witness marks?

can you tell me where did you find the info for checking the timing after the job is done? I remember seeing it somewhere but I cannot find it now.

FSM they are big files. Or just buy the paper one, I find it easier to use.
As for the cam and crank pins - get and use them. Cheap compared to what can go wrong if you just try with marks. And yes I know some have done it with out but......... :dizzy:

Short version - start by manually rotating the engine until the cam and flywheel pins can be inserted; witness mark everything you want (IMHO at minimum crank, fuel pump, opposing cam teeth); lock cams with Miller tool if you have it; relax tensioner; install belt; tension; double check witness marks; remove locking stuff; manually rotate engine at least twice (IIRC 3 times if you used the fuel pump pulley notch and tick on TB back cover as one witness mark) and reconfirm witness marks all in line up and reinsert cam and flywheel pins; if marks line up and pins go in easily remove pins and briefly (30 sec or so) before reinstalling front TB cover and serp belt and such.

Others feel free to add.

X2 as I've noted before use the right tools and based on the Austin experience don't even think about using allen wrenches as cam pins.

I'll be changing the WP also, so marking opposing teeth on the cam gears wont help me at all (since they are to come out).

Now, this might be a dumb question, so apologize if it is....

If everything is lined up with the witness marks, what good is it to test timing of the engine by rotating it by hand two or three turns...... doesn't the belt keep everything together? it's obviously going to match up with the marks....am I seeing this wrong? How that does tells me everything is timed??

siardi and ibHenry respectively and noting that this is my somewhat paranoid or overly careful opinion.

No, marking the opposing cam teeth won't help much if the cams are coming out although it will not do any harm and may help if after you pull the cam bolts but before you pull the cams you witness mark the cam ends although I have seen evidence that the cam ends have notches that point toward each other when the cams shafts are aligned. Manually rotating the engine after installing the belt does 3 things 1) lets you feel if the cams valve are hitting anything; 2) fully seats the belt in the various teeth it runs over which; 3) allows you to double check the tensioner which will probably need adjustment. Finally in my world of measure twice cut once it lets you recheck the insertion of the pins. Or to put it in really stark terms take 10 extra minutes to make sure you won't have to pull the top off the engine to replace 16 broken rockers and lifters. Hate to say it but, your choice. Me I'm going to be extremely over careful and will take absolutely no shortcuts on TB intall (other than maybe keeping old idlers with solid bearings) on an interference engine.

See above notes on my caution level. In "shortcut" world in theory if you are doing just the TB on running engine you could just open things up, witness mark a few thing with no pins and no cam tool, yank the old belt off and intall a new one, rotate and if the witness marks line up drive. In theory this "should" work. In practice I wouldn't do that with a you know what to my head, see broken lifter comments. The purpose of the cam and flywheel pins is to make sure the engine is in time and the cam locking tool 1) on a TB only job makes double sure it stays there and 2) on a WP job is necessary because the pins are not strong enough to hold will the cam bolts are removed. As noted above I'm not doing what I personally consider risky shortcuts on my engine or any other member's engine that I'm working on.

Just me. Others can cut corners which may work or may not, see recent broken lifters chat.

I didn't use any pins to lock it in place. But I sure will if I ever have to tear it down again. Like I said i didn't do much research before i dove in and I sure as hell will next time. As far as making sure it was in time all my marks were still lined up as before and we turned it by hand several times with no interference. Really we took a shot in the dark not a good thing to do I'll have to admit!

I'm not trying to cut corners, trust me on that one, the reason for my inquiry is so that I understand what I'm doing, worthless will be for me to turn the engine 50 times by hand if I don't know what I'm looking at.
