I just bought a 2006 jeep liberty crd. This is what I have been told about the jeep. The previous owner said they had problems with loosing water. And then one day the jeep wouldn't turn over when trying to crank. He took it to the dealership and they told him he had a cracked head. He then wanted a second opinion so he took it to his mechanic. The mechanic told him that it was hydro locked so he drained the water and oil. Then put new oil in jeep and cranked it up. He didn't let it run long because it was making a lot of top end engine noise.

So this is where I come in at. I got it home knowing it at least had a blown head gasket. The first thing i did was removed the valve cover/cylinder head cover. 12 of the 16 rocker arms were either broke or severely twisted. I figured they broke because the cylinders got full of water and when the valves tried to open the rocker arms couldn't push against the water. They were obviously designed to be the weakest link in the engine.

I was wondering if anybody had an opinion for the best route to fix this engine. Should I just replace head gasket and rocker arms, or buy a used head from somebody, etc. Depending on my options, if anybody has the parts available please let me know. I cant wait to get this jeep on the road. Thanks.

I have a cylinder head for sale if you need it. First thing is to try and figure out where the water leak is.

Not that I give dealerships any credit for diagnosing problems

but - I think you shouldn't rule out a cracked head -

without pulling it and letting a good machine shop check it out.

it adds head bolts and a gasket - but most of the works already done

Did the previous owner say it was loosing water, as in water running on the ground when the engine was running or that it was loseing water in that he/she needed to add water every 400 miles? There is a thread on the forum by racetracker on a problem with slow loss of water, finally had to have his head reworked to cure the problem. Wasn't cracked but warped maybe?

With the condition of the engine I would strongly recommend you at least pull the head. Galatron just did his top end rocker/lifter replacement and has some good info - things to watch out for.

Good luck.

How much for the cylinder head? And what condition is it in?

I would say the condition is perfect - It was never overheated or run hot, and the engine it was on failed at the bottom end, not the top. It has been shrink-wrapped in plastic for several years now to protect it, and it has all the valves mounted and intact. You would still need the lifters and rockers, but you know you need those already. This has 60k miles on it.

Mopar Parts America lists it currently at $1292, and I know that would be coming from a dealer which means it is a remanufactured unit.
Make me an offer?

This was kind of the part I was hoping to get by buying a used head. We removed the head yesterday and its at the shop today to see if it is warped. The head looks great though my dad found a smoking gun right off the bat. When he flipped the head upside down a little freeze plug fell out. So we assume that this is what caused the water to enter the cylinders. Not sure why the freeze plug fell out. But it seems that it did not have a blown head gasket after all. All we think we are going to need are the rocker arms and lifters, not a whole cylinder head.

I am trying to figure out the cheapest place to buy them. It looks like I can get a brand new rockers off ebay for about $203.
But I still don't know if this is the best place to order them from for the best deal and quality.

See wobbly's post. If the eBay price seems too good to be true it's not true. Shopping for best price is fine but shopping for cheapest is risky at best.

If you already took the head off, you might as well have it checked out by a machine shop...

We took it and dropped it off at a cylinder head shop today.

Ok I need rockers, lifters, and head gasket set. I will probably get the rockers and lifters from Wobbly but where is the best place to buy the head gasket set?

Any Chrysler Jeep dealer will have it, it's a dealer only item or call VM Motori North America they keep a good supply of timing belt parts available.

You will need to know if your head gasket has one hole, two hole or no hole on the long tab.

Is there a possibility that you could point out which plug it was that fell out and where it was located on the cylinder head with some photos?

This is the freeze plug that fell out. Still do not know the reason since I didn't own the vehicle when it happened. I'm not sure what the vehicle went through.

Ended up making my own camshaft alignment pins. I used glow plugs off a 2001 TDI jetta as you can see in the pictures.
