discovered that the intermediate shaft is not sitting in the half shaft right, I think anyway. very loose and angled but I cannot pull it to remove from half shaft. Couple of questions

1. can I drive with just the driver side half shaft? how do I keep oil from coming out of the passenger side?
2. How do I get the intermediate separated from the rest of the shaft?
3. where do i get a new one?

Thanks

alright, I am putting everything back together minus the half shaft for now. I am thinking if I just plug the hole for now with a small rag and some tape I should be ok until I get the new part?

anybody object to that?

You'll be OK, cover the hole so no dirt gets in
Trying to separate the Intermediate shaft from the half shaft just put it in a vise and use a hammer to knock one out of the other, more than likely its rusted together

Quite possible that doing so will make pulling a tooth seem easy.

Do you have a trailer with a Pintle hitch style trailer sitting around. Use it I jacked mine up to the top of its height and slammed the bearing sleeve through it as hard as I could using the intermedate shaft as a handle. It worked out better then the whole hammer approach for me.

Thanks Mudd, so do I have to rebuild the the half and replace the CV as well as the intermed shaft?

This looks like the intermediate shaft, I guess they also call inner axle shaft? Sorry, I pulled the drivers side once to replace a bearing seal but never the passenger side.

That's the part you want. It shows it with the new clips on it, verify they come with the shaft because if they don't you will be waiting for them to come in at the local stealership but at least they are cheap 2$ each iirc.

Do you happen to know the part-number for the clips? I am in the process of getting the CV's and shaft, want to make sure I have everything.

so I pulled the inner shaft from the rest of the half shaft and it looks fine other then a lot of dirt and a missing O ring. The teeth are barely worn. When I do slide it back in there it is loose and wobbles around is that normal? I don't think I need to replace the CV maybe just the inner shaft?

If they where worn together both likely have slightly worn teeth especially if they where seized together. for what a CV shaft is worth for one of these rigs you should replace it now, no point in tossing back in a used CV and toasting another intermediate shaft.

Times two
if both are worn just a little and you install one new part against it then it will wear faster.
NAPA remanned is 60-65 bucks when you trade the old one in. Best to do it right now and not have to worry about it for a good while

Alrighty that is what I will do, is there anything that can be done with this CV? Rebuild or something? I guess it would be an OK trail spare.

Any write up for this job? Im getting all the parts together right now to replace my inner half shaft. Any tips on this? Do you have to open the front diff cover to access the inner shaft? Did you replace any bearings?

I have been reading thru a bunch of old posts and from what I have read everyone is saying that you do not have to pull the cover. Should just slide and lock in with the C clips.

Wanted to add that Eric at Automotive Parts Unlimited, 800-270-5224 in NJ is no longer working there. They did get a new order of inner shafts so I just ordered one for $95. The guy I spoke to his name was Ray, he said that they don't come with the C clips but I should have it tomorrow.

Got it last night, Dana brand and does have both C clips but no O ring gasket. Is that really needed? I am sure it is.

I will just keep adding to this...

Picked up my CV from Napa just now. Boots are definitely not the same quality as from the factory. Much softer so I will have to be careful when reinstalling. I wonder how they will hold up but for 60 bucks, I guess you can't go wrong.
