I'm new to the forum and I've been looking for some information on black smoke. I have a 2005 CRD that's stock and I use it for towing my 2000 lb. camper. Works great, but recently the Jeep has been sending out excessive black smoke on acceleration. (not pulling trailer) I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for on the forum. I would like to identify the most likely causes for the smoke. The smoke is not awful but definetely excessive. Should I check the hoses? They are original. The Jeep has 87,000 miles. I have just retired and I'm planing to start with all of the recommended mod's including a GDE tune. But I would like to clear up the smoke first.

If the turbo>intercooler>engine hoses are 1st gen OEM original they definitely need to come off for a cleaning and full inspection. If either are soggy with oil, like a soaked sponge, I'd replace with either 2nd gen OEM or Samcos which are my preference. As to the smoking add some diesel injector cleaner to the next couple of tanks of fuel which may help. That said don't wait on the GDE tune because one of the tunes side benefits is that it will make most all the smoke go away. My CRD used to look like a mosquito fogging truck under even light throttle and I had a wonderful black soot mark on the rear bumper above the tailpipe. About 1 month after my GDE EcoTune all that went away, no not the stain which I had to hand clean but it never came back. About the only way I can get smoke now is a full throttle acceration from a near standstill going up a bit of a grade and even then there isn't much smoke.

Mine used to smoke a little on partial throttle too. Gettin a Provent and cleaning the Map sensor seemed to help with that then getting the GDE eco tune realy cleaned it up. now it only smokes on WOT . with you noticing more smoke than before I would check the CAC hoses for a small opening someplace. I still have the OEM ones too not sure if Gen I or II but I would not buy the dealers hoses. I been thinking of replacing mine soon before they fail so I called a few dealers for prices. One said he never heard of a diesel Liberty so I hung up on him, the second dealer wanted over $300+ local tax for a set and they had to order it. you can get samco sport from boostcontroller.com for $255.64 shipped and they are supposed to be better than stock. I will be saving $50 over the stealer and upgrading to Samco Sport soon.

Thanks for all your help. I'll start with the hoses and work on all of your suggestions. I'll let you know the results when I've bottled my smoke!
Thanks again!

Mine was working fine. Slight smoke on acceleration but not much and not often. Then I had to have an emissions test done. It passed, but about a mile down the street after the test, my check engine light came on. Then I noticed a little lag. Or not so much lag, but just not the pick up it regularly has. And Smoke COMES out. Excessively. We were planning a trip into the mountains that day, so we went ahead and went. On the interstate on the way out there we noticed a severe lack of power on the big hills. Like we were at almost 4 rpms(which it redlines at 4) climbing pretty steep grades and struggling to stay at 45 mph. And smoke was billowing out. Once we got on the trails, and they were pretty rough, it did great though. Smoked a few times when we had to gun it over a rock, but other than that nothing. Any thoughts?

Perhaps your CAC hoses are beginning to leak - usually on the underside where the oil collects. Remove the hose and the mesh over it and inspect closely; it's not easy to spot unless the hose is pulled.

Can also be air in fuel - change the filter lately?

Any codes?

x2. Sounds like an intercooler hose. I bet they burst it doing the full power acceleration part of the emissions test.

If the CAC hoses were cut, it should set the P0299 for underboost.

Probably the EGR valve is sticking in some maneuvers, and if you have EGR at high engine loads it will smoke like crazy.
It could also be causing the issue of lagging performance in high RPM since the lack of full boost limits the injected fuel amount.

Not to start a debate but another owner local to me had poor performance with lots of smoke and no codes. His CAC hoses were soggy with oil but with no apparent holes and certainly no large tears. Problem was cured with Samco installation.

My only counter point to MrMopar64 is "should" doesn't always equal "will" in the real world.

When my CAC hose tore, the first thing I notice was lack of power on highway grades and a ton of smoke accelerating onto the interstate. Only after going near full pedal did it throw P0299.

So I ok the cac hoses off today. Neither had any kind of a tear or crack. One had some residu on the netting around it but it wasn't soaked with oil. I was going to replace them anyway but I can't find anywhere to buy them. So I put them back on for now. Any thoughts on where to buy them? And with them being so expensive, is there any way to test if that is the problem before I buy them?

Samco makes aftermarket boost hoses that are stronger than stock, available at www.boostcontroller.com.

Based on your review of the boost hoses they are not your problem. The issue is most likely the beginning stages of EGR system clogging. You can disconnect the MAF sensor to see if the smoke clears up when accelerating.

Would a GDE tune fix this?

Fixed my smoke that used to look like a mosquito fogging truck on acceleration

But were you experiencing loss of power? I mean I hear my turbo spool but it never kicks in. I have the sp diesel controller thing and if I put it on "fuel efficiency", no black smoke but no power. "High output" puts out a ton of smoke, but still no power. not above 2000 rpms.
I did unplug my MAF and drove like that on the interstate a minute ago and the smoke cleared up a little but not all that much.

No loss of power with my smoke but the GDE tune did take care of my smoke.

If you have a loss of power with smoke some causes could be problem CAC hoses; boost pressure solenoid not working (bypass it to check); sticky turbo vanes (check for linkage movement); EGR issue (unplug MAF sensor which will turn on a CEL but if the problem goes away it's because the EGR was shut down entirely)

To the OP (chiseler),

Is there a check engine light on and if so what are the fault codes?

A GDE tune will lower smoke as compared to stock, but if the smoke has gotten worse or is a new issue it points to something else mechanical that is not working properly.

So my check engine light came on. P2099. First time I have ever been happy to see that orange light come on. Does this mean it is the hoses? Or just something with the turbo boost. Does this at least rule out the EGR malfunctioning? I do plan on doing the GDE sooner than later but replacing these hoses is going to make it have to wait until next month. Anyone know anywhere I can get OEM hoses or even samco here in denver? I hate ordering stuff online. Especially when it is something I need today. As far as the boost pressure solenoid, I have no idea about any of that. Any info or links to info about it or checking the linkage movement in the turbo vanes would be very helpful. I want my Libby running great and it makes me sad that she is so slow. Especially due to an emission tech guy flooring her. Paying $80 for a test, $20 for a guy to "verify the vin", and now about $300 to replace the hoses they tore really annoys me.

So maybe I was wrong on the condition of my cac hoses. Would this be considered a tear?
