I overtorqued a glowplug that forced pulling the head, new head gasket, etc. Parts took forever to order and were overpriced. I was 110% overworked with work and life and didnt try to order the parts myself, I'm sure I could have gone cheaper, but all I know is that it was a ton of $ just in parts and those parts took forever to arrive. I think it was in the shop just shy of a month, but I wrapped the 100k mile stuff into the "fix" since it was all apart: new timing belt, pulleys, tensioners, waterpump, thermostat, etc.

The truck is new to me but my take away from the experience was that I should have just purchased a grand cherokee with the mercedes benz CRD motor. Not that MB parts are cheap but there are more of those motors around in the US than VMs and more folks that know how to work on it. Anyhow, I'm 6000 miles past that experience and everything runs great and I'm a happy camper (that looks at autotrader.com too much for any GC CRDs :)

FWIW I have decided to part out my 2005 Libby with 84,000 miles on her.

I was going to swap the motor into my grand cherokee but my health is telling me otherwise.

So I have a good motor and turbo with 84k on it, plus the timing belt tools, uninstalled new style fuel filter head, etc...

It may not fit your time frame though as the engine is still in the libby and needs to be pulled.

Be careful of what you wish for because you may just get it.

Quoting my local Jeep parts department, GC diesel parts are non existant and if something goes wrong with your engine the whole engine gets replaced. Over 14 grand including labor.

Jeep parts boys said that Mercedes is pissed at JEEP and wont let them get away with it..... not sure what that means.

Would you be willing to sell your tools and extras separately?

Yes if the engine buyer doesn't want them.

How does $3500 sound?

It is at a garage that i rent and I do have a lift there and tools so it shouldn't be too hard.

Finally got my motor guy to open up the jeep , 2nd cylinder sleeve windowed and pistons destroyed , have pics will post when I get them uploaded to photo bucket :-( looks like when the stealer ship changed the injector they ran it with all the coolant in the engine causing the damage argh !!!! Mech says he should be able to fix it but need new sleeve and piston set as well as a new head , I'm researching parts now and will see how it goes . Sooo disappointed !!

At 8000 miles my CRD broke off a Glow Plug and DC put in a new engine (under warranty). I would also call GreenDieselEngineering to get another opinion on your symptoms and codes.

Good Luck

How do we prohibit the CRD from breaking off a glow plug? Replace ceramic with the metal ones? Is it a crap shoot either way?

I hope it works out. Never trust a dealer period, most dont have a dedicated diesel mech. I took mine in a while back with an injector down, they wanted to sell two and the Mopar kits are $1200 each! Ended up getting a remanufacturered injector for like $250 out of Oregon that has done fine.

Struggling with coolant woes now, though its pointing towards the EGR.

I am about ready to part the thing out myself.....

Jimbob,
How many miles do you have on your Jeep?

So are the 3 in my vicinity. Remember most of the posts here, other than those trading ideas about the best tires or batteries or such, are folks looking for solutions to problems. I hate so say it but some of those problems, perhaps not many, directly relate to exceeding timing belt change interval or incorrect fluids, often from previous owner.
