A month ago I bought a CRD with 104K. So far I love that engine but last weekend I stopped by the store and when I came out it wouldn't start. The engine cranked fine but just wouldn't catch. I called a tow and went to eat in the mall but when I can out about 45 minutes later it started.
I read some stuff on the forums about the fuel head getting air in it and a new one was available. I ordered it and just installed it but earlier today the same starting problem and after a half an hour it started fine. Anyway I installed the new head and was wondering if it will fix the problem or is it something else? Today when it wouldn't start I checked the old fuel head to make sure no air came out and none did.

BTW - Great forum

No 'check engine light' (CEL)?

Does the new head have a hand pump?
If so, does it feel firm when it won't start?
Do you have an inline (or in tank) fuel pump?

How much fuel in the tank? Maybe not relevant but you never know...

Welcome :D
Since you didn't find any air at the filter head during the last incident it's time to look elsewhere.
I had a intermittent "crank but no start" problem that ended up being a crankshaft speed sensor that was going bad.
Drove me crazy for over a month trying to diagnose the problem myself. I wasn't getting any trouble codes and it would not stay broke long enough to find the problem :dizzy:

The pump on the fuel head was firm & 1/2 tank of fuel (it was still the old one when it wouldn't start I changed it yesterday)
I saw something about the crankshaft sensor on this forum.
How hard is that to change?
New fuel head is on. Started first time. We'll see when it gets hot.
Thanks for the info!

See CATCRD's post with the list of all socket and wrench sizes for sensor replacement. You can test sensor as described. The most frustrating thing for me was figuring out how to unplug the connector in very little space to see :?

I'm battling the same problem right now. I've heard that both the crankshaft position/speed sensor and the injectors themselves are likely culprits. Let me know what you find, and good luck!

Replaced the fuel head with improved model for $89 including filter. So far two weeks of uninterupted starts. Looks like it's fixed. I order the crank sensor in case.
