First my ABS and BRAKE light came on when I made sharp turns (ie a 3 point turn). Then it came on constantly. Then my odometer and tripometer stopped working.

I read that its probably a speed sensor or wire on the rear diff. that got frayed. I will have to see if I can fix that myself.

The other thing is that my engine takes a while to start now. Sometimes as long as 4 seconds. It used to start in less than 2 seconds and start very smoothly. Now it takes a while and sputters for a split second before running. Once started, it runs fine. It does not stall. I never have trouble starting it, just that it takes longer.

All of these things have happened almost at the same time.

1) Is the engine starting related, or just a coincidence?
2) is this problem easy to fix for those not mechanically gifted? I hear its just a $35 wire, but I'm not sure if I could figure out how to fix it.

What year CRD do you have? 05 has L & R front wheel sensors and a single rear sensor on top of the differential; the rear apparently tends to have the connecting wires break inside the insulation which can be repaired. 06 has sensors on all 4 wheels. Whichever year model you have your brake and odometer problem are likely because one or more of those sensors has died or the wiring is broken. Offhand I don't have links to how to test but I'm sure someone does.

Engine crank is unrelated. How recently have you changed your fuel filter? Could be a clogged fuel filter. Could be a bit of air in the fuel filter head; bleed per video on Sir Sam's NOOB guide. If you have the 1s gen filter head consider replacing with 2n gen.

Going through the ABS issues myself.

First do a visual inspection of left and right wheel sensor wiring. The cable is shielded by plastic corrugated cable tube near the wheels rims. If the cable gaurd comes off or gets repositioned its very easy for the sensor wire to wear on the wheel rim. Can cut right through it over time or in an instant during a sharp turn. If wiring looks good up front, then check the sensor on the Diff (assuming you have an 05)

The rear sensor only has one bolt holding into the diff. Disconnect the connector, remove the sensor. Might have to use a screw driver or pry bar and GENTLY twist it as your remove it. The O ring makes a pretty good seal. Clean it, make sure the socket is free of dirt and debris and reinstall. Check the cable side connector as well.

The rear speed sensor wiring runs through a big rubber grommet on the floor to a connector under the back seat. I didn't have to remove the seat completely, just unbolt the floor bolts for the side behind the driver. I used a strap to hold the seat bottom, up and out of the way. loosen the seatbelt bolt and manuever the carpet and pad so you can see the floor. the connector is clipped to the cross member and the wiring then runs up under the kickplate. Once you get to the connector you can check continutity to the sensor connector.

If you've opened up the brake bleaders recently or had your brakes changed, you might have air in the system. Unfortunately the only way to get them bleed is to take it to the dealer. Need to use Starscan to bleed the ABS unit. Might need to take it to the dealer to get the ABS codes read anyway. Innova makes a ABS scanner that supposedly can read the Liberty, It doesn't work on CRD's.

I had a similar problem. My traction control (ESC) light would come on, my ABS light and my cruise control. then they would go out. when they were out, when I pushed the brakes, about half the time, the ABS started engaging, on dry pavement, which is not normal. I did some online research and found this to be a pretty common liberty issue. I couldn't get the codes read and they were always cleared out, local dealer said there was nothing wrong (but wouldn't test drive it so I could prove it), presumably because the code was cleared.
So I did some thinking, and figured that since the problem was likely to happen in a slow speed tight turn, or under braking, that the ABS/Traction control computer must be thinking that a wheel is spinning outside of tolerance, which would be a signal issue, either from a short or a bad sensor. Since the rear sensors at $14 each at my dealer, I just bought two of them, installed them (5 minutes each side), and the problem has not resurfaced. I'm not saying it is solved (that's tempting fate), but I can say that it happened virtually every time I touched the brakes, at least 50% of the time, and it has not happened in a week. As i noted above, on other forums this issue had been raised, and quite a few people had just changed sensor, or found a short in a harness.
