The local Toyota has an 05 KJ 6 speed right now. Just went to look at it and man it has a cable clutch and a solid feeling gear box! If only I got a manual.

Public service announcement: If you're buying a KJ consider a manual.

Unless you need to tow.

Agreed :D , I looked for a while to find a 2.8 Manual, there was a few 2.5CRD's but VERY few 2.8's 8)

Towing - if its a heavy load like an industrial trailer or a caravan, manual all the way, as you can control the abuse the transmission suffer's a little more and be kinder to the truck

Off roadin - deffo an auto, though a manual first gear, in low range, seems a little lower geared than an auto to me .. but not too sure. I've off-roaded a manual and an auto, and found the manual to be a bit of a liability in a couple of awkward situations we tend to find ourselves in from time to time on the rough stuff  :?

You do know that the auto trans has a much higher tow rating then the manual trans?

I have been on the trails in my both a auto and now my 5 speed. The five speed is a bit more interesting in some off road situations but that makes it fun. :JEEPIN:

europe CRD rating is 7500, not sure if that's for auto or stick or both.

Ever wonder why almost all KOH vehicles use auto's?

Heck look at new 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups.Only 1 has a manual available and that is the Dodge but you must take a 200lbs-ft reduction(600lbs-ft instead of 800lbs-ft) to get a manual.

That's true, the 2012 Dodge Ram Cummins with the auto produces 800lb-ft of torque whereas the manual only produces 610lb-ft of torque. Auto's can handle the power, manuals can't.

i didnt buy my KJ to tow.... and in general manual vs auto in the same vehicle... manuals will put down more power on a dyno because less is lost through the drivetrain. unless it's computer limited like the 2012 dodge. mechanical numbers... manual will always make more power to the ground.

funny part, I did buy mine to tow. it was one of the explicit reasons I bought the Liberty.

Towing.
Family Hauling.
4wd/snow/foul stuff capabilities.
off-roading.

pretty much in that order, and in decreasing importance.

Lock the TC on a auto and you will have less torque loss then a manual.

The torque converter in a auto virtually give a unlimited crawl ratio for offroad,as well as a buffer to absorb drivetrain shock which a manual can not do.Hence why more poeple break u-joints and such offroad with a manual then a auto. The whole "my manual has a lower 1st gear then any auto" maybe true on paper but add the torque converter in a auto add's about on average of 2:1-2.5:1 reduction itself so in reality a auto has a lower 1st gear ratio.

You can feel the difference. Manual in first is much lower than the auto was.

x2. i've driven both auto's and manuals with KJ's and TJ's.. manuals have much lower crawl speed

and an auto will not put down more power then a manual even with the tc locked... if you put them both on the dyno the manual will still put more power to the ground(dyno). Still less loss through the drivetrain. If you lock the TC isn't that the same as a manual? you still have to get the wheels moving.. which means using the TC.

plus it's nice to have that J-joint breaking tq instead of waiting for a tq converter to hook up. sometimes that's the difference between making it through a situation or not.

it's also nice that a manual doesn't kick in and out of overdrive with larger then stock tires (without regearing or trans work). plus manuals sound less like a motorboat with an exhaust :JEEPIN: 8)

The '06 like mine with the 6 speed has a nifty feature where stalling the jeep in 4 lo is not that big of a liability, as the vehicle can be started without engaging the clutch. Perfect for those teetering, scare the krap out of you situations. I love the manual. It is just a plain gas to drive. :JEEPIN:
