Yup... someone stole y spare tire last night

Oakland, sometimes you challenge my patience. So, somebody stole my spare tire last night. I'm assuming I should have had some kind of lock on it. Does anybody know the cheapest place to pick up another stock spare and what security precautions I should take in the future?

U-Pull-It Boneyards have been a good source for me when I want cheap wheels with rubber on them.

You might also want to pick up one of those locking-lug-nut kits from your local parts hut. Don't gorilla the nut down onto that stud, but give it a good arm to lock it down and prevent this from happening again.

I found mine on ebay with free shipping 60.00. It wasn't perfect but for a spare.

Wheel locks, wheel locks, wheel locks. On all five, you'll have tires to drive :wink:

Those wheel locks only add 20 seconds to someone steeling your wheels.The tools needed to remove them are easily bought from any parts store for cheap.

Better to let them steel the wheels/tires then steel the whole Jeep.

My sister's 97 grand cherokee was broken into and attempted to be stolen. I say attempted b/c they hammered a screwdriver into the door cylinder and spun that to open the door (3 seconds or so) and probably used a slide hammer to yank the key cylinder out of the column.

They had the engine running, I know this for certain, because I was able to re-start the engine with just my thumb. Luckily (maybe - the thing was a cursed money pit) they screwed up the column and that delicate cable linkage to the shifter that prevents you from moving the selector out of PARK without both the key turned and your foot on the brake. The key turn part was broken and the selector stayed locked.

THAT took longer than 20 seconds, and they left the vehicle and stole someone else's from the same parking lot.
Yea - If they want what you have, they are gonna get it. Plain and simple. But to think that they will take the whole truck when they just want a tire? Stupid. It is a LOT easier to pawn / sell / reuse / hide a tire and rim, than it is an entire truck that has to be registered with the state to be usable indefinitely.

My 2002 CRD Export model came standard with a special locking nut on the spare wheel...needs a special spanner which sits under the rear seat but hopefully the thieves do not know that.

I suppose Chrysler did their homework and realised that on in South Africa some form of protection is needed.

My four road wheels I have had fitted with other locking bolts and so far so good.

Same here, my spare has a differant type of security bolt/key to the ones on the road wheels .. and a deterant is sometimes all it take's, and can make the differance between a theif having it away with your stuff, or not bothering :wink:

You don't HAVE to make it invincible, you just have to make it enough harder to steal than the next guy's, so that they skip yours and go for his instead.

if you want something better than a wheel stud lock then go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a short cable lock to put on it and be done.

you do understand that even if you have a stud locks -
it only takes an open end and a minute or so to pull the entire rear mount......

have you considered moving to a better neighborhood?

A couple of years ago here in Australia my BJ42 Land Cruiser was broken into and my GPS/ashtray with change/ tools stolen. The crack head broke my driver's side vent window with a stone (he missed the first two throws, which shows why Aussies tend to be kickers in the NFL and not quarterbacks) and then opened the door to get in. The irony is that the doors were not locked. I never lock them on the theory that if someone wants something inside they will get it whether it is locked or not. If I lock it (my thoughts were at the time), I will simply have to replace the stolen items AND the window. As it turned out, I had to do that anyway.

My point is that it seems to me that these pricks (who really should be shot on sight to prevent recidivism) are not the sharpest tools in the shed - they are opportunists. They will simply take whatever they can, so making it more difficult for them may not stop them but at least we can make the bass turds work for it.

When I was in high school in Colorado I had a friend with a convertible VW Rabbit. He had an Alpine tape deck in it (I'm dating myself here, but nevermind) which was stolen. He put a new one in and put single-edge razor blades into the screws at the back of the deck. One day when he was in Denver he came out to the car an there was blood all over the passenger floor, seat and door... but his deck was still there with a broken face plate. I'm not advocating this sort of thing; just putting forward an interesting story.

These days, upon returning to his car that had been setup like that, he would have found the criminal standing with the cops, waiting to arrest YOU for endangering HIM while he was trying to steal your stuff.

The sad part is - The cops probably WOULD arrest you, for making an "illegal booby trap" and might even let criminal stupid walk away.

Sadly, you are right. Pity though, if we simply hanged folks for stealing like they did in days gone by perhaps there would be less theivery.... I'm not advocating vigilante justice, mind you... just advocating the return of the hanging tree in town squares.

I feel your pain. I live in Oakland. Luckily I bought a set of 4 wheel locks. One is on the spare. No one messes with it. The crackheads who steal these are smart enough to beat a wheel lock. After all, they are stealing just one tire.
