CRD Brake Moan

Anybody else out there getting brake moan from the rear brakes after the vehicle has sat unused for a day or two? We get it occasionally backing out of the driveway in the mornings, but recently we parked the CRD at the airport for 5 days while traveling. It moaned really bad for about quarter mile. Of course, by the time you get it to the dealer, it has stopped, and they give you the "unable to reproduce customer complaint" nonsense. Anybody had this problem and had it fixed? If so, what was the fix?

Have had this same problem, very wierd. We went camping and parked her for a few days and then the noise that you reported, a moan, appeared. It now happens every once in a while in the morning. It just quits so I don't worry to much about it, maybe just rusted calipers or something. Or maybe she just dosn't like it when you don't drive her everyday.

there is a service bulletin about it. i took my libby in for the same thing (it gets worse when the temp is cold)

the 1st time they wouldnt do anything about it becasue they couldnt hear it. next time i dropped it off in the morning and they let it sit for awhile. once they heard the noise they replaced the rear pads and rotors (both sides)

the service bulletin is tsb 05-001-04

They just turned my rotors and replaced the pads. Acted like I was nuts. Of course, they drove it for four days and couldn't replicate the 50 - 55 MPH stumble.

We let our new CRD sit for a week, then when we drove it off the first time, the brakes moaned. We are going to take it in next week to discuss the bulletin above.

all KJ's with discs in the back are prone to this. It's not limited to just the CRD's. my 03 3.7 does it sometimes too. Havent heard it in a long long time, except at the beach last weekend. But I chalk that up to the salty muggy air, and the fact i went playin on the beach and drove through a nice little salt puddle left over from high tide that morning.

Had the same issue with my 2003 KJ, but only when cold and after a wet night, after a while it went away and I miss it now, it was like waking up this old beast, growling cold diesel and moaning brakes, at least you know you started up something special and not a Geo Metro.

I don't think this is a CRD problem. I don't even think it's a Jeep problem. All vehicles can be prone to this. What happens is when your vehicle sits for a while, the moisture causes a "film" to develop on the discs or drums...depending on which you have. It's sort of a rusty glaze that froms on the bare metal of the brakes. Go to a dealership sometime and look at the discs on the vehicles that have been sitting in their lots...they will be almost orange with rust buildup on the discs.

So when you get in and take off in the morning it takes a few minutes to wear this glaze off the discs. It's perfectly normal, affects all makes and models of vehicles (some worse than others of course), and does not indicate a problem with the Jeep.

If your brakes KEEP moaning the entire time you drive your vehicle...THEN you probably have an issue to worry about.

BS. My F-350 has disks in the back, and it can sit 'till you know what freezes over and the disks never make a sound. Also, there has never been any rust or "film" on the CRDs disks when they "moan".

OK, I should have phrased that differently. I didn't mean that every vehicle made with disc brakes will have this problem. What I meant was, every vehicle with disc brakes COULD have this problem. I personally have had three of four completely different vehicles with rear discs that had this issue, and I've heard lots of other people complaining of the same things.

Point is, if it's a moan that goes away after driving for a minute or so then it is NOT a problem that is specific to the Jeep. If you are 5 miles down the road and your brakes are still moaning like crazy, then yes you need to head to the service department fast.
