Your KJ is MORE than capable to wheel stock. I wheeled my KJ stock 3 or 4 times before any mods except for skid plates, as did many other guys here, and as some still do!

Thats why I asked what the trails were like before, mine is pretty much stock yet also, with exception of tires, no skids, so would like to run up and go on this one but???? May have everything for my lift by then. Getting it like Johnny Cash got his Cadillac, one piece at a time!

I'm out on this one. With Moab and Camp Jeep, another long trip up to Michigan is out of the question.

Is there anything I need to buy (like a sticker) before I get there or can I take care of that there?

"Anything needed like a sticker"

There has been some conflicting reports on this.
I called the Cadillac DNR and they stated not ORV pass was required for a "State Licensed vehicle"
So If you legally drive there, your good to go, but if you tow an off road only monster, you will need a ORV sticker.

I will recall today over lunch and reverify this.

The following link is to the Michigan ORV Laws.

http://www.offroad-ed.com/mi/handbook/

About half way down the page on this link it states that ORV license is not needed for ORV Routes

http://www.offroad-ed.com/mi/handbook/register.htm

The DNR issues licenses for all ORVs on an annual basis. The annual fee for an ORV license is $16.25.

Licenses are valid from April 1 through March 31 of the following year, regardless of the date of purchase. Vehicles that are licensed under the Motor Vehicle Code as street vehicles require an ORV license only at such time as they are being used as an ORV. A “street-licensed” ORV does not need an ORV license to use forest roads, but it will need an ORV license if it is used on designated trails or in areas designated for cross-country use.

Note: An ORV license is not required for street-licensed vehicles used on the frozen surface of public waters or designated ORV routes.

Private land owners and their invited guests are not required to license ORVs that are operated exclusively on their private property.

Licensing is required of ORVs used in areas open to public operation regardless of whether the ORV is owned by a resident or nonresident of Michigan.

So the big question is, What types of road and trails will we be riding on?

When I called, I was told that an ORV sticker IS required to run the trails there. Good news is, it can be ordered online and will be mailed to you.
Here's the link http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/welcome.asp
Click on "List of Licenses" and then go to number 105 which is almost to the bottom of the page. Number 101 is the same thing but has to be purchased at an agent location.
If you click on "License Agent Locations", there are several out of state agents listed as well as a ton in the state where you can buy the sticker in person.
Keep in mind that these stickers are good at all ORV trails/parks in Michigan, such as Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Drummond Island, the Mounds etc and doesn't expire until 3/31/07.

In MI, you can get them at any store that sells hunting and fishing licenses. I got mine at Walmart.

If I can get that weekend free, I'd be interested. I'll post back closer to June.

Don't count your eggs before....whatever

Wow so my hopes are crushed. I got the wrong location on google maps and it showed it being someplace west of lansing. turns out its madhouse crayZ far for me.

Well not really, only about 200 miles, but unfortunately that fall on the week before jeep payment day and I cant spare the extra $100 in gas that weekend.

If I can scrounge up the cash I will be there, but unfortunately I am withdrawing for now. I wish I had a real job and money.

You guys had better take Absolutely AWESOME pictures in my absence.

Have fun, hope I can join you in the future.

Sorry guys, I'd love to go, but a friend wants to hit Moab then, so.... I think I'm going to pick rock damage over mud.

Here is the trail head entrance off M-37 ( opposite end of camp grounds)

The next images are on the south loop of the trail:

The trails are soft sand.
Sunday they were a bit bumpy in the flats.
Some of the corners are washed from bikes and quads.
There was everything from Bikes to Dune buggies.
Me and the Mrs had a good time just bopping along with the radio on.

There is an additional option for camping. It is a small private location, just off M-37 very close to the south trail head.
They take reservations. some pit toilets but they have SHOWERS.
$16.00 for RV'v $10 Tents.
I forgot the number at home, I will post more tonight.

More trail information:
The trails ARE the sled bed for winter snowmobile riding.
This means they are approxamatly 10' -12' wide.
There are several snakey areas, unfortunalty they do not lend well negotiating and picture taking at the same time
So I have pictures of nice flat stuff. The open area is from logging and is only about 10% of the trail length.
The bulk of the trail twists and turns through the woods.
You predominatly goto 4Low and roll on. There are no rocks, there was water holes, but we got 1.5" of rain the night befor.
There are inclines, but nothing major.
To sum up:
You should not need a lift, unless you get high centered on a corner washout. tires are going to be your friend as in any sandy environment.
I had fun and look forward to our get together.
