I have begun to experience transmission shudder going uphill at 63mph, I have a Chrysler service contract, does anyone know how difficult it will be to get Chrysler to replace the TC?

Who's gone down this road and how did you handle it?

I just took mine in the nearest trusted dealerships and tell them about the issues I am having. Most of the time they don't give you to much grief since it is a warranty claim and they get paid either way.

Yea... Apparently, the smarter you seem to be about your own vehicle, the more problems you will have from them. You almost need to go in and just say "car broken" and hope for the best. They will ignore your specifics anyway, and just cause problems for you later when you ask the service droid (who doesn't know which end of the wrench goes on the bolt) what really went on. All the droid will do is dilute your carefully thought out description to "transmission broken, check and advise" on the sheet.

I wouldn't ask specifically for any "euro" converter, but ask at the parts counter which converters they would order for a CRD, and have the part number in hand so you can compare.
Whatever the first one is that the parts monkey comes up with, will most likely be the same one that gets selected when the tech walks up to the parts monkey and asks for it.

Been there. Done it. It can be frustrating. :? The best thing you can do is work with a service manager and parts department to get the Euro. My experience was I had to pay for the part but install was free. This combo got me part and labor warranty. I posted the good and bad. racertracer,

My wife bought our 2005 KJ from a Jeep dealer in 2007 and they sold her a "bumper-to-bumper" warranty from some company in Florida. This warranty has actually been a dream (even though it has not paid for itself yet). I took the Jeep to one of the best transmission shops in the area, told them about the shudder and gave them the warranty company info. They verified the problem, got authorization from the warranty company and put in the euro TC (RL037142AA). The total bill was over $1100, my portion was $189.

Its all going to depend on the actual warranty they sold you.

Best of luck to you.

Yeah. I'm kinda sick that way. I rolled it 4x and walked away. So it's a safe vehicle from crash perspective. :dizzy: Despite all the, *ahem*, challenges  with these Crds, it fits my purposes to the letter.

Oh by the way, torquecoverter1.com I think it is has replacements for around $180 shipped if you can do the install. There is a link on here somewhere. I will most likely go that route when mine needs replacing.

The shudder has gotten worse, the jeep will be going to the dealer tomorrow.

I am leaning towards the euro torque converter.

Mine has started experiencing the shudder at 60 bit recently, too. When I took it in to get the head gasket replaced yesterday, my bride, to my shock and amazement said "should we just bite the bullet and get the torque converter replaced while we're at it?"

She has hated the Jeep since we started having EGR issues at 4,000 miles. So my astonishment almost lead to passing out in shock when she went on to allow as how the Jeep has grown on her lately, and it wasn't a total loss after all, in spite of the repairs we've had to put into it.

I quite like the little tractor, in spite of its quirks and the stupidity of its designers in undersizing the TC, etc.

Hope to find out the extent of the head gasket issue today. Got my fingers crossed the head isn't too badly warped to mill flat. My wrench says as long as it doesn't look like a banana when he sets it down . . . .

The "Euro" is now the standard replacement TC. I had the Chrysler service contract, and my dealer replaced the TC, pump, and some other parts (I have the list somewhere) under that contract without charging me a penny. I am in England, and have a good relationship with my dealer so that may have helped. It was done about 2 or so years ago.

I should say that they'd never heard of the issue (nor had Chrysler UK) so I referred them to this forum and the relevant posts; they looked it up and then recommended the fix and got it approved.

Been there, done that too :banghead:
If you can get the service writer to go with you driving up a hill and it shudders there should be no problem. My problem was it was when towing my trailer :D
I asked about the front pump and was told no but when I asked if they replaced the front seal when they replaced the converter they said yes. I informed him they changed the front pump and the old seal was no longer available :SOMBRERO:

OK- The Jeep dealer confirmed that my CRD does need a TC and it will be replaced under warranty with the new EURO TC and pump.

I found out that the dealer will not be swapping out the pump, only the TC.

And feed back on this?

That sounds fishy to me, unless the pump and TC have been replaced before. When I had mine done the first time they were also supposed to replace the A/C condenser/ Tranny cooler shared platform. That got done the second time. I also would check part numbers closely regarding the TC. My experience was Chrysler's flat out refusal to put in the Euro to the point of replacing a crap part 3x and then replacing the whole darn tranny at which point I paid for the Euro and did not have to pay the labor to install since the were in that far anyway.

Yea, I'm with Woodtick - Check the part numbers. You know my experiences with Chrysler Corporate - Cheap bastages. If they can avoid spending a nickle and at the same time cause MORE headaches and future problems with these CRDs... They will. They view the repeated dealer visits for repairs of the same system... As "Good customer retention" because you came back to them! You must like them!

Yea... NO.

Push for the whole job to be done CORRECTLY according to the original recall procedure. If it called for the pump - you should get the pump.

According to the service department my CRD already had the pump replaced in November 2006. I am looking for the TSB # for the pump... does anybody have it?

Here is the TSB for the filters and the delayed engagement: http://www.xkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_xk_2100706.pdf.

From what I remember, the reason for the replacement of the pump was that TC failure spreads clutch material throughout the transmission, particularly affecting the pump... And that there was a redesign of the seal.

It is possible that the seal was the only *real* reason for replacement of the pump, so if you already have the new design, then they might not need to do it again. I'm in uncharted water here b/c I have no clue which pump my transmission now has, or even what year of CRD my transmission came from since the whole thing was replaced. I have to trust the shop that did the work (and I do) and that the TC they put in is a solid brute like I asked for.

No shudder for me, so I have to believe everything is solid... I'll know for sure when I someday get the GDE turbo kit.
