 Post subject: Jeep Just Cutting Off While Driving

I started having a problem with the jeep yesterday. No idea what it could be. We went out and hiked hanging lake yesterday morning. On the way back we got to just before Vail, on 70, and the jeep just died. Just cut off. I pulled over and checked my fluid level and they were all fine so I decided to see if I could start her. She started with no problems. We got about 10 minutes down the road and it did it again. So once again I pulled over, put her in park, and restarted her. But it kept happening every 15-20 miles. No problem starting up and running but it'll just die while I'm driving. I can't seem to find anything on lost with those symptoms. Any thoughts?

on a side note Vail pass is the highest elevation I-70 reaches and the temp the day all this happened was over 100. would the heat and altitude do this?

You know honestly I haven't. I bought it back in February and the guy claimed to have just changed it and the oil, so I took him at his word for it. Would that cause it to just die like that?

Yes, if it's clogged then your car will starve for fuel and cut out as you described.

Try the bleeding procedure, if you have excessive air in the fuel filter then you either have a leaky head or a dirty filter causing a buildup. Check for air in the filter head and report back.

Sounds like a sensor problem to me. A friend of mine had the same symptoms in his CRD and it turned out to be a mismatch between actual sensor data and what the ECM expected to see (aka sensor confusion according to my Jeep mechanic). Turning it off and on works for awhile but eventually the time required gets longer and longer. I'd start with looking at the Crank sensor, input and output sensors on the transmission, anything that senses on the moving shafts. Good luck, and sometimes the code (if any) can be missing or misleading. Also check your battery, and alternator, as low voltage situations need to be eliminated before zeroing in on particular sensors. My CRD mechanic friend suggest replacing the sensors as the vehicle ages after 100,000, and if you live in very hot places this may be needed before that.

To me it sounds like your crankshaft position sensor is going bad. Do a search and there are numerous threads on the symptoms and solution.

I checked the fuel line yesterday. There was a little air that came out before the bleeder shot diesel. There is a CEL on but didn't have time to get it checked out today.

Getting the code would really help. Most people don't get a code for the crankshaft sensor error, but you can get a code if your filter is plugged. Maybe a P0093 or something? See if the filter is loose too.

So I just wanted to give an update- I haven't had a CEL(or more accurately, read something other than the MAF code) come on or the problem occur again. So I guess I'm going to go with the high heat and elevation of that day. For now at least. And if it happens again, I'll cross that bridge then.

I would suspect air in the system. Mine has done the same thing on four different occasions three of which were before I installed a Cummins lift pump. The latest occurred a couple weeks ago driving at about 8,500 ft on a highway at 70 mph. I thought that the
fit pump would've solved the problem but apparently not entirely. It did start right up after shutdown and has not recurred.

Maybe these things kind of vapor lock at elevation when it's hot out. :shrug:

My Jeep was doing the same thing until I added a fuel pump. I believe the stupid push connector on the fuel line at tank was the problem but I like the security of the pump. Two years now and never happened again!

Happened again. Funny thing. SirSam fixed a vacuum line leak I had a few months ago and while he was under the hood he pushed the primer on my fuel head and commented on how nice and stiff it was. Then he looked at the heater plug, and said he was surprised how good both looked/felt. Lately I have noticed the primer become easy to push. Not that I play with it a lot but since the time this started, I have bled it a few times. So I'm going to go with what I remember him telling me that time, and my memory is not the best so help me out here.

Ok Number One- New Fuel filter and head. plus connectors.
These are the part number I need?

Because that is what I saw on other threads, but at moparpartsamerica.com, it says it finds both but they don't fit my vehicle. And the second one, 68043086AA, says it has now been superceded by and is now part 68043086AB. So I just want to make sure.
And I think he said it came with a filter? Or do I need to order one too?

Number Two-New Fuel Pump Wait Jeep Gyped Me Out Of That So Just A FUEL PUMP
Az Crd I see you used a cummins. Did you as well dieselsRule? Because I feel like that was the one SirSam reccommended.
How hard was it to install? Where Did you plug it in? Anything else you feel like sharing?

Number Three-I see people saying fuel leak issues. Should I be worried about that being the reason for air getting in the lines? I just had it sitting for about a week and a half and not leakage under it and I filled it up before I left and it was still completely full when I got back.

I changed the filter/heater unit because the plug on the heater was leaking fuel. This leak produced awesome amounts of black smoke under hard acceleration! That stopped after the upgrade Mopar Filter/heater. It also came with a new filter.
I went to NAPA and found a low pressure diesel fuel pump for 30 some dollars. I made a bracket and attached to some existing holes by the tank, cut the push connector section out, plumbed with supplied hose. The wiring hookup is detailed in an article in LOST. The hookup is under the rear left seat carpet. IT is essential to ONLY use this hookup as it provides the safety shut off in a no run situation.
I've had my Jeep for 4 1/2 years now and it is very dependable thanks to LOST, not to Mopar.
I get 26 mpg highway and recently pulled a 16' car hauler, loaded, for 200 miles and got 20 mpg!
I recently changed the worthless Cooper street tires for some aggressive AT tires and eliminated its tendency to swap ends on wet pavement in two wheel drive. All that TORQUE!
