 Post subject: Power Steering pump failure and removal

So,
Last night my occasionally squeaky power steering pump failed and locked up tight. No fluid loss or leak up to this point, but it locked up, shredded the belt and it won't turn in either direction at all. Dealer only item at $404, but when it has to be on the road, what are you going to do?

Anybody ever remove one? What's the best way to get at it From the bottom or from the top? Any tips or tricks? I know I need to use the Chrysler ATF and not PS fluid..

Per 05 FSM from Sir Sam's download (see section 19 beginning on pg 19-27). I suspect from above is best; unless you remove the engine skid plate you cannot get at it from underneath. NOTE pg 19-26 has a method for purging air from the system on a refill that involves a special tool. Someone else will have to weigh in as to whether or not you can use the simple old school method of loosely install the fluid feed line; fill the reservoir; let fluid start to leak from the feed line so that line is full of fluid; tighten the feed line; and then crank the engine and turn the wheel (don't hold at full lock) a bit from side to side to flush air out of the system. Post how it goes and any hints for future use.
Removal
(1) Siphon out as much power steering fluid as possible.
(2) Remove the engine cooling fan.
(3) Remove the fan shroud
(4) Remove the serpentine drive belt.
(5) Remove the three bolts (5) securing the pulley
(4) to the pump (2). (Fig. 5)
(6) Remove the power steering hoses (1). (Fig. 5)
(7) Remove the three bolts (3) securing the pump
(2) to the bracket. (Fig. 5)
(8) Remove the pump from the vehicle.
Reinstall
(1) Install the pump to the vehicle.
(2) Install the three bolts (3) securing the pump (2)
to the bracket. (Fig. 8).
(3) Install the power steering hoses (1). (Fig. 8)
(4) Install the three bolts (5) securing the pulley
(4) to the pump (2). (Fig. 8).
(5) Install the serpentine belt.
(6) Install the fan shroud
(7) Install the engine cooling fan.
(8) Refill the power steering fluid and check for leaks.

Be sure the tensioner didn't come apart and rub the p/s pulley like mine did. That will mean you need a tensioner and belt not ps pump. Once you get to the pump remove the three bolts on the ps pump pulley and look behind it.

...I wish I had read this BEFORE I ordered the PS pump. I didn't notice the tensioner was riding on the PS pulley. removed the tensioner and the PS pump is totally fine. The tensioner is, however, toast. Hopefully I can cancel the PS pump order and get the tensioner on it's way.

...that's not frustrating...

However, lesson learned. I was very excited a month ago when I was able to replace just the tensioner pulley, but in my excitement, I didn't check the tensioner to make sure it was fine. Now I get to do the job twice.

Yup....I thought the exact same thing, I thought my PS pump was seized but rather the tensioner was locked onto the pulley causing it to appear seized. Replaced the tensioner and all is good.

FYI this can be done with removing of the airbox and some greasy arms.

FYI Napa has the pump listed for much cheaper than 404....around 180 last I checked.

Also FYI our pump is the same basic unit used in other vehicles, someone with the right know how could use a $30 off the shelf replacement instead.

This is very good info, especially about the ps pump at napa. I called several auto parts places near me and after the third said, "dealer only" I gave up. "fortunately" (sarcasm) it only cost me a 20% restocking fee.. Tensioner should be here in the morning. Also upgrading fan clutch to the heavy duty Hayden unit while its apart.

Well, we're all back together. Nothing more fun than installing a new serp belt. New fan clutch, we'll give it a good hard tow in the next few days to see how she pulls
