I have on order a Derale 8000 series transmission cooler http://www.etrailer.com/p-D13503.html, which should be here Thursday, July 5. I got a few questions to ask before installing this.

1) I have went through the FSM and have not been able to locate which connection on the factory cooler is the feed or return. Anyone know which is which?

2) Where have people mounted their coolers? I see the standard "in front of the condenser" won't work due to the electric fan being there. And, I bet you those mounting zip ties aren't long enough to go through the condenser, intercooler, and radiator all at the same time. I have some ideas on mounting, but can't fabricate until I get it. Maybe if others tell me what they have done, it may make my life simpler.

3) Also, what size fitting is on the stock cooler. Maybe the local hose and hydraulic shop can make me a hose for it.

I got to get my CRD ready for towing sooner rather than later since work is sending me to Locomotive Engineer School in less than 2 weeks. :banghead:

To find what line is which just start with a totally cold engine,start and let run for about 10mins,shut off and the warmer of the 2 lines is the feed line.You want the AUX cooler on the return line after going through the main cooler 1st.To tie into the return line just cut the rubber part of the OE line and use 3/8" double barbed fittings and high quaility hose clamps,you will need to add about 1/4-1/2 qt of ATF+4.You can use the supplied zip ties but only go through one component which means some disassembly is required.If fabbing up a mount make sure it's sturdy so the AUX cooler does not rub on another cooler.

Here is how I mounted mine. It's a B&M 70268 in series after the stock cooler.

It slid right in from above without the need to notch or cut anything in the grille. I bent and used the metal mounting straps that came with the cooler into brackets that mounted in the locations which hold the condensor. The outside temp sensor was relocated a little to get into a stream of fresh air. I used 3/4" conduit to cover the hoses as they went up and prevent chafing. The fluid fills it from the bottom so air is always pushed out. There are only the two brackets that hold it. Otherwise it wedges in tight and is rock solid.

I saw two posts about the "outside air temperature sensor". Is this what the ECM uses? Or is it for models with the overhead display of temp? OR both?

Even in the 100F heat we are having, my trans temp stays below 160F with my Aux cooler
and extra deep PMP pan. To make the Aux cooler work best, you need the air flow. When you can't drive fast enough, the Hayden Severe duty viscus fan clutch along with the 11 blade Mopar fan makes every thing cooler in high heat, The fuel cooler is on the return line side and by keeping the fuel cooler eliminates the hot weather power down the ECM does to protect the CP3.

It is used for the overhead display, I'm not sure about other uses.

FWIW the stock tranny cooler is only about 55 sq in in area. The B&M I added is 77 by itself.

Installed my cooler today. I found out quickly that unplugging the temperature sensor would trigger a CEL.

I used aluminum angle to make my custom brackets. I also used wire loom to help protect the hoses from possible rubbing damage.
