So what did your insurance company say when you told them you ran over a rock on a forest service road? (not offroad!)

Forest road, what forest road? I don't see no forest road! It was a county road - on some maps at least. And I hit a rock - which is the truth. They say they need to inspect it, speak with the dealership & go from there so I don't know yet if it's covered. But before they inspect, I'm going to go out to the dealer & wash & wax the car - seriously. I want it shiny when they show up.....not covered in mud as it currently is. A nice, shiny, clean car driving on a flat, well maintained county road - that just happened to be hit by a rock that jumped out in front of me.

Sooo... IF by some miricle it is covered I want to have them put the Euro torque converter in it. Does anyone have the part number for that torque converter and know the best place to get one?

Any other suggestions for things to have done while it's in pieces?

Sprinkle holy water and burn sage brush around it, it can't hurt.

Asking for a blessing (or an exorcism) from a local priest wouldn't be a bad idea either.

The most likely outcome however, is that the insurance will buy you out of it. They will want the dealer to do the work (shudder) and at full retail rates, that EASILY surpasses the 75% of value threshold they will have.

Got anything good you want off the vehicle? Might want to get it while you are washing off the mud.

Also, if they want to total it out consider doing a buyback and then ordering the $2900 remained long block that needs to be ordered from italy, then having someone like myself install it.

Might take a little while to get it back on the road, but you would come out financially way ahead.

Best plan yet, hinges on the insurance stepping in to help though.

I should know "either Thursday, or maybe Friday or Monday" when it is inspected....... according to the insurance person on the phone.

That is a nice idea... Until you try to make the two COMPLETELY incompatible computer and engine anti-theft systems work with each other. Both vehicles are loaded to the rafters with computer nonsense to make theft as difficult as possible... Unless you happen to own a tow truck (or steal one of those first).

Trying to swap the CRD motor into anything else and get it to start, is an exercise in madness. Ditto for the VW TDI engine. I looked at swapping the TDI into another vehicle once before, and gave up on the idea when I started getting into the computer side of the problem, b/c of their stupid anti-theft crap that is built-in to the engine ECM. Chrysler's system is even worse.

It's covered!!!!!
Hard to believe, but the insurance inspector turned out to be my advocate on this one. He pointed out that not only would the engine need replacing but the engine cradle as well....which means we are now nearing $10,000 in repairs. He thought that it might be totaled, but checked the book & said it was $14,200 on the limited....so cut a check to the dealer & told them whatever gaskets & incidentals were needed would be covered as well!

Time to order that torque converter.....:)

WOW - WAY TO GO! That is fantastic news!

Which insurance company do you have? I think we all might want to look at their rates and maybe give them some business.

Did he have any thoughts about the turbo? I'm not a betting man that it survived the oil starvation, so that will need to be considered too.

I told them I was not so sure about the condition of the turbo & they said they would check it carefully. I told them I was concerned that some turbo bearing damage may not be evident by simply measuring slop and that I didn't want to pay for yet another engine if the turbo started throwing bits & pieces into the engine next year. They agreed but wanted to check it anyhow. We'll see....

Welcome back, great news.

Yes, and don't forget to include the front pump. It's a very important part, that should come as a kit with the new TC...it makes for a smooth running VM 2.8L CRD.

Order some skid plates too. I do a bit of trailing on the logging roads in western maine. I've been bit a few times, never serious though

Torque converter on its way... I also ordered Skid Row front & tranny skid plates to replace my stock - and obviously inadequate - skid plate.

Wow... Wow. Who do you use for insurance? I want them. Oh, and delete this post if you can. You don't need insurance fraud.

That's why I haven't answered your question......
Although, it's NOT fraud.
I was indeed on a county road, I am a Gold member with NO previous claims, I have a perfect driving record for 30 YEARS, I pay a premium for an old car & no deductible. They are losing NOTHING. I have no problem with them helping me out with a seized engine.... at least ONCE every THREE DECADES!
