Alright, so just recently my key fob stopped (intermittantly) unlocking and locking the doors. This wouldn't be a great big deal since I really don't mind unlocking car doors, but it's a pain in my rear because now the alarm goes off until I put the key in the ignition and it's embarrassing.

How often do you guys replace those batteries? It's a 2006 Liberty CRD and I've NEVER replaced the batteries in the key fob, I'm thinking something like Batteries Plus.

Let's say that is not the issue however, where do I look next?

After batteries would be a replacement remote/key.

My 2002 CRD still has the original batteries in the two fobs supplied but I do not use my Jeep to much so have not used the fobs to much.

Does this happen with both key fobs...I presume you have two?

Otherwise maybe you need to have the BCM re-programmed for your fobs after putting new batteries in? :?

See your owners manual, top shelf in glove box or on line, the battery is a Panasonic CR2032 or equivalent available at most any drug store for maybe $5. I've replaced them on other remotes in the past but not often.

I found replacement batteries at Autozone at the front register. Mine takes two.

Harbor freight has em cheaply, so does walmart. Even grocery stores have them.

Yeah, I stopped at a Batteries Plus yesterday and got 2 of them for $5.

Problem still exists, but it's intermittant. Sometimes the key fob works and locks and unlocks the doors, and sometimes it won't unlock it.

I had the key fob checked after replacing the batteries, and it is transmitting strongly. They had a tester at Batteries Plus and it worked all the way across the store, so I don't believe the actual fob is the issue.

Anyone know where the sending/receiving unit is under there so I can make sure the antenna isn't wrapped around a solenoid or rubbing a wire or something?

You might check your 12V battery and cables, to make certain there's enough voltage for the electronics to function properly.

That kind of coincidence can be sneaky... and if you still have the original red-top it could be giving you marginal performance.

The electronics seems susceptible to a weak main battery.

The sender/receiver unit is a module plugged onto the BCM which is bolted on the back of the fuse panel that is inside the cabin.
Try re-plugging it and all the connectors on the BCM/Fuse panel. :?

Edit to add: What I have stated above is true for the 2002/3 KJs......the information I have for the 2006 KJ does not seem to show a seperate module for remote key lock/unlocking that plugs onto the BCM so maybe it is intergral to the BCM itself on later models :?

X2 on a possible main vehicle battery issue.

Correction/update to Billwill's post - both the 05 and 06 FSMs show a remote keyless entry module as being a separate part but attached to the BCM. Exactly how they interact I am not totally sure but the RKEM does store the key codes. If your main vehicle battery is ok my guess is you have an intermittent failure to receive or recognize the key fob signal. Assuming the key fob is transmitting the proper signal code, it's doing so at least some of the time, I presume it's possible the RKEM is not recognizing that fact and telling the BCM to unlock. Unfortunately I think it's going to require a dealer or similar scan tool to check the RKEM but the "good" news is this is NOT a CRD issue rather it's a routine KJ issue, perhaps even a general DCJ, issue so any DCJ dealer should be able to deal with it as may be a really good locksmith shop. If the RKEM is bad a scan tool will be absolutely essential to set the codes on the new RKEM

I am also having the same issue. Intermittently the lock/unlock will work or not work. Even with changing the batteries in both keyfobs. The battery appears new in the Jeep, since I just recently purchased it. When it doesn't work, I just do it the Portuguese way...his name is Manuel.

When the key fob does not work and you unlock the door manually does that trigger the alarm and then the alarm goes off when you put the key in the ignition and turn it on?

If that's the case the system is recognizing the key chip as valid so I would assume the failure to unlock is related to the transmission/receipt of the key fob unlock command. Don't know if that logic helps any just want to get it out there.
