Getting Hot while pulling hills.

Well the adventure began. Ran great from RI to NJ. Got on 78 in Jersey and started pulling hills into the lehigh valley. Temp was getting to the 3/4 mark, then cooled off going down the hill. I got the 180 in hose thermo, hayden superduty clutch, and stock fan. I was thinking of taking the thermostat out before heading home. Any other thoughts?

I may have become jaded due to 2 previous head gaskets leaks, so you may not want to hear what I have to say.

But if I were you, I would get rid of the inline thermostat immediately and run the cooling system without it.

Then invest in the OEM thermostat and do the swap correctly.

You guys don't know what you're fooling with, Really.

Has the cooling system ever been flushed?

How many miles on your CRD?

85k and I just purchased it a few months back. I have not flushed it and doubt the previous owner did.

Go with the Hayden severe duty fan clutch and the 11 blade nylon MOPAR fan used on the 3.7L with the towing option. It has been posted so many times the upgrade should be a STICKY.

You still should be able to take the inline out and run with just the failed thermostat, if it is failed open.

I believe the upper radiator hose is also used on toyota's. Someplace in here, there was a post about that. You should be able to get that even in Lancaster County.

I got tools with me. I will find a bucket and pull it out of the hose and see how it runs.

I already have the hayden. Just using the stock fan.

Racer, why is Keith wrong about using a 195 F thermostat in these things?

A 195 F thermostat is fine if it is incorpoated in the stock housing (see Kap's modded t-stat). I am not inclined to believe the inline t-stat is agreat idea as it adds overall system restriction and can hinder flowrate to the radiator. This is most likely only a concern when towing heavy loads.

I think that is my issue keith. I got a brand new hayden clutch installed. Should be cool.

Wish someone would be making those t-stats. Kap had some great ideas he built. Maybe in 4 years when he gets back to the states we can all line up for them again.

Ok, so I am lost. Pulled the inhose out today. Expected to have the idle temp at the 1/4 mark like before. It is acting like the thermostat is still in and is a bit below 1/2. Pulled two hills and the temp climbed. I thing I am going to see how long Torque will run and monitor my temp.

Also, EGTs must have been up there. My poor catch bottle for my cyclonic separator got melted and deformed. I had a feeling it may happen.

If I recollect, the coolant gauge will be at 3/4 mark or slightly above when the stock mechanical fan viscous coupling engages. The engine software has build in thermal management (overheat protection), so you can just keep going and it will limit top speed to prevent the top tank coolant temps from exceeding roughly 243 F. If your gauge is not pegged, then you are nowhere near the overheat limit. The gauge calibration by Chrysler is just wrong and should not be pointing in the hot direction when the engine is not near the overheat point.

Reading that post, I guess I was hotter than I thought. I swore my AC shut down on the trip over last Saturday. I never did get any dings.

After we depart the Crayola factory, I am going to monitor the temps. I am hoping to get the hot tune after upgrading my TC but id I am overheating with the Eco, I wonder what the Hot would do.

When I was towing through hills and mountains, I used a trick to keep it in 4th gear. The engine ran cooler and got better fuel mileage.

Made it back. Temp didn't rise as high without the inhose thermostat. It got up to about 1 tick before 3/4 on the biggest pull. I am thinking of doing a flush and new cap in the near future and wait until next year to see if it helps.

Dang, what's the total weight pulled? I'm sure with the trailer loaded it's up there. Glad you made it back though.

I'm pulling my 22 Center Console fully loaded with the trailer its about 3800 with no issues up and down 24 but there's just that one incline north of Fall River.
