Made it back. Temp didn't rise as high without the inhose thermostat. It got up to about 1 tick before 3/4 on the biggest pull. I am thinking of doing a flush and new cap in the near future and wait until next year to see if it helps.

Dang, what's the total weight pulled? I'm sure with the trailer loaded it's up there. Glad you made it back though.

I'm pulling my 22 Center Console fully loaded with the trailer its about 3800 with no issues up and down 24 but there's just that one incline north of Fall River.

3800 plus gear and some water (just enough for an emergency overnight). I figure 4300. Don't forget frontal area.

I am thinking there is something with my Jeep. On may 18, when I put the in hose thermostat in, my temp was around 1/4. Now, with the thermostat removed, it is just under 1/2. Something isn't right.

I may have become jaded due to 2 previous head gaskets leaks, so you may not want to hear what I have to say.

But if I were you, I would get rid of the inline thermostat immediately and run the cooling system without it.

Then invest in the OEM thermostat and do the swap correctly.

You guys don't know what you're fooling with, Really.

I just wanted to weigh in here with a little learnin' from towing my TT, which weighs close to 5,000 lbs fully laden, and presents an 8 foot square wall to the wind (which, frankly, is more of a burden on the jeep than the weight).

And that learnin' is that while the stock fan pulls a lot of air through the radiator when the fan clutch is engaged, IT PULLS A _LOT_ MORE AIR THROUGH AT 3500 RPM THAN AT 2000 RPM.

So, yeah, when you get to that mongo hill/mountain, and the temp starts climbing, don't go out of your way to keep in in higher gears. 4th is better than 5th for cooling. And guess what? 3rd is even better and you can make it stay in 3rd at 60 mpg just by hitting the overdrive button, and locking out both 4th and 5th.

And yes, I am aware that this forum includes folks who say if you don't manage to keep it in 5th at all times while cruisin,' you are doin' it all wrong. As someone who cracked his cylinder head and blew the head gasket, no doubt by overheating, I don't care. I plan to do whatever is needed to keep that temp guage down off of the big red "H."

BTW, for what it is worth, I've rarely found it necessary to touch the brakes going down 6% or even 8% slopes on the Interstates. The trailer acts like a giant parachute

Thanks for the info. On those pulls, I was in 3rd. Before I rent again, (or purchase one), I am going to try a few things.

1) Flush and Cap. Maybe an additive like royal purple.

2) If that doesn't work, then try a fixed race fan.
