oil in water

well I have a CRD with 105k miles and many problems like most of us but the recent one that is baffling me is the is oil in the coolant, actually my coolant is about 90% sludgy oil, granted my brother is a diesel mechanic and put an extra gallon of oil in it when he found it so now its worse (idiot). so where should I start looking? head gasket? or oil cooler? my brother says oil cooler but I have never seen anyone on here say they had problems with an oil cooler.

Well, the choices are limited. Since you can probably access the cooler easier you might start there and see what you find - it costs little to look and requires less labor/gaskets to do so.

Who knows?

Once you pop the head, you're replacing the head gaskets anyway.. but if it's not the cooler the heads should be checked for warping at a shop with experienced mechanics.

There is one way oil can get into the coolant with these rigs that is not a big deal. It is at the EGR valve. Do a search for EGR.

Before you take the motor apart, I would check and service/replace the EGR valve. If you find that the oil is getting into the coolant at the EGR valve and you fix it, then be sure to do the EHM and do several rounds of a coolant system cleaner to get as much oil out if the cooling system as possible.

A GDE tuned ECU or EGR is essential for longevity. An operational EGR puts so much soot in the oil that even 5000 mile oil change intervals may result in premature failure of the rocker arm bearings.

thanks DOC, I didnt think of the EGR valve and I have the GDE ecotune. so where would all the oil come from with the EGR valve?

Need to do your homework on the site. Its all here. And make sure you do the EHM in addition to the GDE ECU you already have. (It's easy, but make sure you use a plug that can't melt or fall out in the end of the hose that goes to the turbo that normally connects to the breather on the cam cover.)

I'd like to know what you mean also. There doesnt seam to be any oil at the egr valve to be pushed into the cooling system.
P.S. DOC, you know the search on this site is...lacking :wink:

FYI - I may be the only one - but I had a gasket on the oil cooler die
- leaked oil into the coolant
replaced under warranty

with about 4 radiator flushes - still has some oil left in there

I thought I had read that someone got oil in coolant through an EGR cooler, but perhaps I recalled it incorrectly and it was you and oil leaking from your oil cooler into the coolant.
