Looks like it's official this time:

http://www.trucktrend.com/roadtests/suv/163_1205_2013_mercedes_benz_glk250_bluetec_first_drive/index.html

Supposed to be for sale in the first quarter of 2013.

I really like these GLK's for the same reason I like my Libby--they seem like a great size for driving around the city, yet still able to be useful on the weekends. And powered by diesel, your towing options improve.

By 2016, there should be some hitting the used/off-lease market and if they're in the $25,000 neighborhood, that might be pretty compelling... Or would it make sense to throw down some coin, pick one up new and immediately do the mods that disable the CCV system and such, in order to save the engine from gunking itself up?

I'd love to hear the Forum's thoughts.

I think a lot more people need to own diesel then there will be a lot more to choose from. Of course I like to convert them to run on grease so I have alternative motives and a new one with a warrenty would due me no good.
Someone needs to buy them new or there will not be any used ones. It might as well be you. After you buy it new write a letter to Jeep and tell them it was time to replace your Liberty diesel but they did not offer a diesel Jeep so you had to purchase the Mercedes. It can't hurt. While you are at it send a letter to Ford and GM also.

That's the best argument I've heard so far to convince my wife that we need to get one: "But Honey, SOMEONE needs to buy them!!!"

Nice to see they are using a 4cyl, that will help keep fuel economy on the low side.
Looks like VW is also going to bring a TDI version of the Tiguan. Couple that with Audi Q5 TDI and BMW X3 diesel coming, the future looks bright for some us us seeking change in a few years.

I hope the diesel-powered smaller SUV trend continues.

If you google "Top Gear BMW X3" and poke around a bit, you will find their field-test of the X3. It's pretty funny--I wouldn't even consider buying one now, as it totally failed it's off-road test. :grim:

I gotta say, in general those "AWD" systems don't really seem to do well when the going actually gets tough...or is it just me? Is it possible to after-market those so their diffs lock up? Or are they limited by their design?

I want to see the Chvrolet Cruze diesel. What was the last American car that had a diesel sold on the USA? Not a truck, the closest thing would be our Jeep Liberty. Maybe the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but those are trucks.
