The dealership where I purchased my CRD sold a total of six 05 models. Five have had EGR replacements at ~6k miles. Unbelieveably, three had a second replacement because DC forced the dealership to use up the inventory of the original EGR for the first replacement. Of the six 05 CRDs sold, mine is the only one with a Provent and at +16k miles has not had EGR problems. My build date is 04/05.

With my luck, my EGR will fail right after my warrantee expires. Makes me wonder if I should disconnect the Provent and let my EGR fail to get the redesigned EGR while I'm still under warrantee - and then reconnect the Provent.

It depends. If you disconnect the Provent, you will have blowby oil in your intercooler, intake system and egr valve. Worst case, you could end up replacing both intercooler hoses, pay labor to remove the intake system, intercooler, air conditioning condensor and valve cover in order to clean up the mess. In one case, the dealer has already denied warranty to perform this cleanup. So you're looking at anywhere from $750 to maybe $1200 for cleanup, depending on how long the dealer labor takes, especially if the hoses have to be replaced. That's not including a new anti-shudder valve if it gets so gooked up that it can't be cleaned. Long term, you will probably shorten the life of your $550 injectors x 4, plus labor, as well, by oil additives coking on the injector tips, as the additives are formulated to not burn. Then there is the matter of what that engine oil will do to your piston rings long term as it cokes up on the piston lands.

An egr lists for $200 to $280 online, which you could replace yourself, or have it replaced for probably $500 total and keep your intake clean. Then there is the possibility that if you keep the provent on, your egr won't fail at all. Take it off, and you will have oil in the intake and some level of cleanup will be required in the future.

So Ranger1, is all that you describe happening to the CRDs that don't have additional CCV filters? I thought the common repair is an EGR replacement. Are people experiencing all of these other problems and repairs?

In varying degrees, yes. I've read multiple reports of users discovering large amounts of oil in their intercooler hoses in as little as 10K to 15K miles with just the factory ccv. One of my intercooler hoses was completely coated inside with engine oil at 2500 miles. I've read of 2 Australian Liberty CRD owners who had blown intercooler hoses due to the oil clogging the Intecooler, and the turbo pressurized the hose until it burst. Then they had to have the intercoolers cleaned. There is one poster on this board who has already had some kind of failure blamed on oil in his intake system, where Jeep was not repairing under warranty. Whether one can get DCX to cover it under warranty even after initial rejection, its still a major hassle.

These stories will likely become more common as time and miles go by. Go to TDIclubdotcom and read the stories of the same issue thats been ocurring for years on TDI's, look at the pictures of the clogged egr/intakes, look at the HOW-TO's on how to remove and clean the TDI intakes, intercoolers and EGR valves. Nothing hit or miss with the clogging - it common enough to have repair guides on how to clean the junk out.

I think it was OldNavy who told of a friend who didn't have one, and when he finally pulled the intercooler hoses off, oil drained out. It's an inconvenience, but not a difficult job to add another ccv.

If I didn't already have a Provent installed, and didn't want to fabricate the mounting bracket, I'd straight pipe the factory ccv hose until OldNavy comes out with his model.

So in an unmodified CRD how could those fixes be the consumers responsibility rather than the manufactures?

Wrong place to ask that question. We're sharing info on what we found and how to fix it. Can't help with DCX warranty policy.

I asked my dealer if the EGR was covered under the 100k warranty provided with 05 models ($100 deductable) and they said it was covered. What is worth investigating is the EGR covered under the emisions warranty at no deductable and for how many miles.

I guess my point is that if I experienced a problem as described above under warranty I would not stand by and pay $1K or so to get it fixed. If the dealer or DC wasn't going to fix it my next visit would be with my own attorney or a representative of the state Attorney General's consumer affairs office. Now if DC is saying that it is not a problem and the repairs are being made at the wish of the consumer that is sort of like saying, gosh I wish I had ordered leather seats. Of course if you have expert testimony that corroborates that the oil will cause damage during the life of the engine or parts, which is much longer and should be much longer than the warranty, then you need to decide to fix it on your own or go to court. This is the kind of thing that class actions love.
