Well, about all I can tell ya is to use a quote from Smokey Yunick: "An engine doesn't know what name is on it." By that I mean, an engine, powered by diesel fuel or gasoline, will benefit from an oil that is designated for it.

Here is a link the Amsoil website: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx

It states clearly that this particular oil will work on either engine. I wouldn't worry too much about it not being strictly an oil for "diesel" engines. The other manufacturer specs, i.e. VW and MB are for diesel engines too. Hope this helps.
Wow!
You got to talk about Amsoil & post a link to your website..... :SOMBRERO:

I have been using Amsoil AFL5L-CA Synthetic 5W-40 European Oil & Amsoil EAO34-EA Absolute Efficiency Oil Filter since I have owned my 06 Jeep Liberty CRD. I would like to add a bypass filter kit if I could find a place for it. Not a lot of room above or below the engine for it.

He stated what he was using and where one can read the specs for it. You had a habit of posting advertorials which had little value, hence people got on your case after reading a dozen of them.

Notice the subtle difference.

Randy,
You are the first to admit to using 0w-40.
Is the M1 euro spec 0w-40 different from the previous version of 0w-40?
I seem to remember seeing a M1 0w-40 that did not specify "European."

This is Mobil One 0w-40 European Car Formula which is printed on the bottle. As for the difference from the Euro spec to the 0w-40 I do not know. I have 79,000 miles on her and as I stated that is the only oil I have used since 2005. I did have a hard time locating this oil, and would purchase a case at my local auto parts store. And still purchase it that way, but I see Walmart has it now. Also as a note have used only Mopar or Napa / Wix brand filters.

I had used the Mobil 1 0w-40 European formula in our 06 up until last December or January. I switched based on the recommendations of some board members here stating the 5w-40 TDT oil was better as it had a better API rating for diesels. Before this year, 0w-40 was the only oil our 06 had seen.

I have used Mobil 1 0-w40 ever since I purchased my CRD 90,000 miles ago, it currently has 122,000 miles on it.
It still runs great with no abnormal sounds. I contribute most of my success to the GDE tune, it is amazing how well the oil stays clean.

Here we go again. I use only M1 0w-40 every 7000 miles. Sorry i follow the book due to it was under warranty untill 80,000 now near 100.000. I feel the thinner recomended oil viscosity will prevent deposits, expecally as the engine gets older. I use no addidives and do not use oil flushes. Some may not agree but thats what i do.

Isn't the viscosity different only at start up and until the engine is warmed up? Once the engine is warmed up isn't the viscosity the same as the 0w-40 and 5w-40 are both 40 weight oils?

The viscosity dose change with temp. What temp they come togather? not sure. But the fact is most engine wear is at start up.
From what i can see there a alot of people using as recomended M1 0w-40 and have had no engine issues. I'm sticking to it!

Now we have 3 that have come forward to say they still use 0w-40.
Only one of which has made it past 100K miles.

My main concern is as our engines get more and more miles on them and bearing surfaces wear down, will a thicker oil be needed?
One poster commented that he is over 200k miles and still using 5w-40.
I would think that at that high of mileage a 10w-40 or 15w-40 would be better for the engine.

If that is the case about needing a thicker oil as the engine wears.....isn't that part of the problem/catch 22? You need the thicker oil for engine wear protection but need the thinner viscosity at start up for the smaller oil passages going to and in the turbo.

There was a member way back when the forum was young, that was using 15w-40 Delvac when his engine grenaded at 66,000 miles.

When he opened it up to repair it, he found that everything was gummied up with sludge inside.

Someone suggeted that 15w 40 conventional oil should only be used at 1000 to 1500 mile intervals in our rigs.

For the oil, I went with what amsoil recommended. I think they were out of the filter
I am going back to the filter though as I only change the oil about every 12,000 or so whch is about 4 months or so.

I'm at 111k and I've used 0w 40 since mile 97. I change about every 6-9k. Used to be more until the ECO tune as my oil is cleaner now.

I hope it's ok. We get pretty cold winters in Michigan, so I think it's ok.

Dirtmover,
I agree about your assessment of the Chrysler specification. What kind of oil to you use?

I've been using Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 0W-40 with Wix filters every 10,000km. This is a diesel rated oil that meets or exceeds API CJ-4. It also has a higher ZDDP content than Mobil 1.

I have a feeling that I should switch to 5W40 over the summer but I buy the stuff by the case and because the change interval is relatively long it's not always practical to sychronise oil changes with the seasons so I've stuck with the one grade.

Didnt know there was a Delvac 1 0w-40.
Mobil doesn't even list it on their website:
http://www.mobil.us/USA-English-LCW/heavydutyengineoils_products_engine-oils_mobil-delvac-1-esp-5w40.aspx
Where do you get it from?

Mobil 1 5w-40 TDT has a pretty high zinc and phosphorus numbers. The only Mobil 1 with higher numbers is their racing oils.

Flash.
Your looking on a USA site and dirtmover is in Canada :dizzy: Canada and USA have always gotten different products in certain catagories.
Here's Delvac 0-40 on the Canadian Mobil one site.
