I haven't changed my tires since I've dipped but I imagine that it'll pull the paint off. At that point you could redo the whole rim or just spray where it came off and touch it up.

I agree. It's really so easy to do you could just peel them off before, or touch up spots if it only messes it up a bit. The Plasti Dip gives such an awesome matte black look that really improves the looks of any colored Liberty.

Does the plasti dip on The rims really stand up to the heat of the brakes? And if it can hold up well what would you say the minimum amount of coats would be?

The Plasti Dip is pretty darn durable for $5. The better job you do, the better it will look. It's all about even, light coats on a clean surface. Most people seemed to use more than me. I don't even think I used 2 cans. I Plasti Dipped my stainless steel exhaust tip the other day and it's still holding up to the heat without any problems.

I had a tire pulled an remounted to patch a hole. I have 5 coats on my rims and the dip held up well... there is a little bit of
"road rash" on the edges but it didn't completely ruin the dip and its hard to see any damage at all from a short distance.

Will a remount damage the dip: yes, but for those who have one tone or matte black wheels they sell a chemical at DYC.com that re liquify's the dip so you can smooth and repaint with few problems

Said fix kit.

I don't get this obsession in the automotive world with Plastidip. Especially on RIMS of all things! If you really want flat black rims THAT badly, JUST PAINT THEM! A can of flat black Rustoleum primer and a topcoat of flat black paint (or textured paint if you want a cool look) will go on easy, look great, clean great, and last for the life of the rims.

Now, for blacking out chrome badges and trim I can see the appeal. For anything larger than that though, it just seems like you are using the wrong product for the job and you should be looking at 3M vinyl coatings or a paint job.

Meh. To each his own I guess.

Except that if you chip painted rims, you're screwed. If you screw up the application, you're screwed. Hate the way it looks? You're...well, you get the point. ;)

The beauty of Plasti-Dip is that it isn't permanent so if you want to remove it for any reason, you just peel it off and you're back to stock. That's why I like it anyway. It's a cheap, easy, and fairly safe way to experiment with different looks.

I think I'm going to plasti dip my rims and I know you can peel it of but has anyone easily peeled the plasti dip off rims after it had been applied for at least a month, after the heat abuse??

That stuff was a nightmare to get off my flares and bumpers.
I ended up using paint thinner and a mountain of rags plus about 4 hours of time.
I think if i used like 6 or 7 cans instead of 3 I would have been in better shape.
I just didn't like how it rolled off every time i dried after washing.

Not sure if this is the case with you, but I don't ever dry off my plasti dipped parts with much force. I treat it like it's fragile. To me it seems like it takes at least a day to become more sturdy. I didn't start applying force to dry my plasti dipped rims for at least a week. Just my experience hopefully someone can apply to their future.

I dipped my wheels without any problems. Brake dust sticks to the plastidip pretty badly but you can rub it off. I have scrubbed the wheels with soap. I've had them on the beach and on a few light trails with a little mud but nothing serious yet. Nov 17th I'm doing some real wheeling to put the plastidip to the test.

I used the spray can on my D-rings that are attached to the front bumper. They look great even after two years.

There are a couple of removal/repair videos on YouTube where it has presumably been on for a while. Here are two:

I've had my door emblems & trail rated badge plastidip'd for over a year.

I plastidip'd my renegade wheels about 5 months ago - no complaints. Brake dust build up was normal even before the plastidip but a good tire/wheel cleaner foam takes care of that effortlessly.

Mild wheeling today and no plastidip damage.

I thought plati-dip was what they used for dipping socket wrenches?

The key to making it last and all peeling off together is it needs to be think. BUT, not thick coats. The first coat should be about 50% transparency. I did about 5-6 coats on my wheels. They look great, and after I went off road a few times I sprayed them down with a power washer and scrubbed them with the brush in the DIY car wash booths. No problems whatsoever.

Also, there's no need to tape off the tires. This stuff will peel off perfectly and as long as there's an edge (i.e. the rim) it will peel off perfectly. Find the user on YouTube "dipyourcar" or "dipyourcar.com" something to that effect. His name is Fonzi, and his vids are excellent.

After I dipped my 4 stock rims, I peeled the plastidip off the tires and two of the tires, I peeled it off in one perfect piece. It's all about lots of light coats!

It is. Some bright spark figured out it works for a lot of other things too though. :)

Has anyone used that Plasti Dip primer that is advertised on their site? Supposedly it makes the coating stick better to metal.
