While on vac in Wyoming last month our 2006 crd lost power, started blowing smoke, and making a strange "pumping" sound. First dealer said gas in diesel. Wrong! Second dealer said bad egr. Wrong! $1,000 later, it is no better. Now at a local mechanic. He says the cat is plugged. Decided to run compression test. Got 180 on cylinder 1, around 320 on the other three. Does anyone know what the spec is for cylinder pressure? Any guesses out there as to what may be wrong? Had timing belt and all pulleys changed at 100,000 mi. Now 120,000. I had hoped to keep this thing for another 100,000 but now I'm not so sure.

No, thank goodness. Mechanic thinks the pumping noise was from restricted exhaust blowing back through valves. Could hear it loudest through air intake.

Had a Mitsubishi 4 Cyl diesel in my Ram 50 in the '80s. Compression was around 400 psi. That 180 psi is not good.

sounds like a compression leak to me. Use a scope to see if there is damage. Attach a mirror to see if any valves is stuck open or don't open.

Nope. I am concerned that the timing belt and pulley change was not done by a mechanic who had the special tools. That was 15000 miles ago.

If you are concerned about incorrect timing, suggest you check the cams/flexplate timing per the manual. if those are good then it's something else. If not good, then you know where to start.

Checking Diesel cylinder compression can be difficult. If a cylinder is not firing correctly it will build up soot under the valves and you will have a leak. If you suspect this you can try to flush the cylinder with Diesel fuel. Just have to change the oil for sure.

Or if you are driving a babied CRD, you can always try the Italian tune up to get rid of the build up that accumulates inside the cylinders and see where that takes you.

An old diesel mechanic said that 2 quarts of unleaded gasoline added to a full 20gal tank of diesel will clear up build-up around valves, rings, cylinder walls and especially injector tips in a diesel engine. Gasoline burns off the build up.

I read somewhere that diesel fuel contains slightly over 5% gasoline as a component.

Any truth to this from the diesel gurus?
