Cross bars only or full on bolt down to the roof itself?

Is it required to have cross bars to put a rack up? Like a full boxed roof rack

Yeah you'll need the cross bars first for a basket if thats what yer talking about. I just have ghetto homemade conduit bars and they work really well for lumber and such.

Why is it required to have cross bars? Is center support the issue. I don't like the look of having big cross bars and then a basket mounted on top of that. at that point the bottom of the roof rack is like 8" from the roof lol.

If you can find a basket wide enough to reach the side rails and also find a way safely mount it to the rounded rails then go for it. I don't like baskets mounted way up high either but unless you buy or make a custom rack ( that bolts to the roof itself) then yes you'll need some kind of crossbars.

Finding a wide basket that's not 400+ dollars is going to be the hard part.

Any decent basket that looks good is going to be that much or more.

I got the RRO Adventure Rack and put 4 6" KC lights on it. Ended up taking the lights down (too many clearance issues). Love the rack though, have used it for kayaks (fit 2 side by side with an inch or two of wiggle room) and for other things. RRO was great as far as customer service and speed went.

I'm currently using a Yakima Megawarrior basket on some Rhino Rack Aero cross bars. I'm really happy with this basket as it its about the same width and length of the rails so fits the car nicely and I can fit a bunch of campig gear on it. Also has easy attachement add-ons for shovel/axe on the side and spotlights for both front and rear. The awning here is attached to the cross bars with just the standard Rhino Rack "L" bracket awning mount.

I'm in Aus, so forgive the flipped nature of the car. 8)

Front on, doesn't sit that high I think.

Thanks guys, yes they are the old AEV bridger Argent rims and I had them powder-coated black. I looooove how they look on the KK! Rare as hens teeth down under as they were discontinued awhile back and I've been trying to source a fifth one as my spare to replace the plain steel rim for ages now. Anyhow.... didn't mean to de-rail your thread about roof-racks chatting about my rims

Oh I think you did and its completely acceptable given how bad a they look. I was curious how a set of AEV wheels off quadratech would look on a KK. Now we all know :pepper:

Sadly they are only 245/70/R16. I keep watering them but they haven't grown any bigger yet

Yea these arn't the newer AEV JK Pintler rims which are the 5x5 bolt pattern, they are the older and now discontinued AEV Bridgers with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern so fit straight onto the KK.

I'm surprised more people don't have some good roof basket setups going on! Like Roastbeef I too am keen to see what racks people are running with!

A DIY rack/basket is on my winter project list. I'll be sure to post some pics but it won't be for a few months, likely after the first of the year.
