I just bought my first Jeep about 3 weeks. 2006 CRD Liberty with about 73K miles. Bright Red. I knew it needed some work when i bought it but I got it at a great prices so there was some room to put money into the Jeep.
After driving a week or so, I drove to next city, about 25 miles 70 mph on the interstate all the way there. Ran great. Got done with my task there after about an hour, and when i got back on the interstate, it was running rough and would not come up to speed. In fact it would not go over 50mph with the pedal to the floor. And when I took off from a red light, it was pedal to the floor and hardly going 10 mph in the city. But I managed to get to my mechanic shop after going back about 25 miles and parked in their lot. When the mechanic came out to start it up and pull into the bay, it started like perfect. Just like the problem never happened. There were no lights on, like the check engine lite. Nothing. He hooked up his computer and found no error codes. Weird.
So he searched his mechanic forums and the only thing he could come up with was to replace the mass air flow sensor and the air filter. Well they did that and it seemed to run fine. Today, about a week later, it did the same rough running, no acceleration thing again. I pulled over, turned off engine. tried to start again, tried again. Then i waited about 5 minutes and it started up fine and ran the rest of the way home with no problem.

So can anyone suggest what the problem might be?
Why no engine lights coming on?
Why no error codes in the computer?

Sounds like limp mode. Could be air in the fuel filter head. My CRD did that one time getting onto the highway, pulled over, tried shutting off and restarting a few times, which did not help. I finally primed the fuel filter head and started it. It has been fine ever since.

Have you replaced the fuel filter?
I agree with MRRausch, it sounds like a fuel problem

Thanks for the replies guys. No I have not replaced the fuel filter but that sounds like a good idea. I have only owned the Jeep about 3 weeks. I am not a mechanic but I have couple of mechanics I use. One suggested the egr valve sticks on these CRD's and can cause it to go into limp mode. so i asked both shops to quote a new egr valve for me. One shop has not gotten back to me yet, but the other shop said $987 to change the egr valve. wow. Maybe I will try to find a new shop. Met a guy today who recommened a mechanic who works on his wrangler all the time so I may give him a call tomorrow. But I really need a guy that knows the CRD. I dont want to go to the dealer cause I used to work at dealers in the part dept and I know how their mechanics work. Ok maybe not all of them.

The EGR valve can be cleaned and returned to service viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62495 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=59352&p=659410#p659410 or you can get a GDE tune which pretty much disables it.

My 05 does that funny stuff once a month, and I already replaced the fuel head.
I am now used to stop on the roadside, shut down the engine , wait a few sec and its good to go. And then sometime I bleed the air out.
Next thing to do is to install the intank Cunmins pump, which has been siting under the dinner table since weeks.... And that will please the wife as well

Sure dose sound like a fuel issue.

1. Dirty filter.
2. Bad fuel head causing air in the fuel.

I would check the fuel head. Pull the plug on the right (drivers side) of the fuel head and push down on the primer a few times untill resistance is built up. Check the plug for fuel, also check the plug for burned pins. If you see any issues change the fuel head and filter. If no leaks, change the filter.

Well my CRD is running better. As I said before I had the MAF sensor changed and the air filter also. Then at the suggestion of some CRD owners I had my mechanic change the fuel filter mounting bracket because that has caused problems like this and it was not very expensive. If the EGR valve needs to be replaced as my mechanic says is possible, that will be expensive. But for now it has not gone into limp mode for quite some time.

I looked into doing the Green Diesel Engineering ECU reprogram but it is $500 so instead I got a Gforce chip for like $69 and it is supposed to also increase the HP and mileage. Does anyone know about this chip and have any experiences to share?

The GDE reprogram is supposed to eliminate the EGR and MAF completely but does the Gforce do the same thing?

I am supposed to clip the Gforce chip into the wires to the Intake Pressure Sensor but I cannot find it. I have a diagram from them and I have looked but I just cannot find it. Any ideas here?

thanks guys.
Oh just wanna say. I LOVE this jeep. cant wait for spring to go hiking in the cascade and Olympic mountains and drive up the rough mountain logging roads. Or if it would just snow around here in the Tacoma Washington area so I can use my 4x4.

I thought it just snowed over there?? My parents had a wreck in the snow near the puyallup area yesterday

The chip you got is a waste in my opinion. The gde tune is really worth every penny!! Get it right away. And make sure you make time to read the Noob guide!

Good luck and enjoy!
